Harper’s Ferry • Oh, that crazy John Brown! • Believes the time has come to liberate slaves • Plots to take over federal armory in Harper’s Ferry, Virgina • Hopes to arm slaves with stolen ammunition • PROBLEM: NO SLAVES SHOW UP • Arrested and hanged • Robert Lee: “Land won’t be cleansed without blood.”

  4. The Secession Crisis • Upon Lincoln’s election, South Carolina secedes • Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Texan secede soon afterwards • Declare themselves the Confederate States of America • Elect Jefferson Davis as president

  5. The Secession Crisis • The Upper South • Maryland, Virginia, Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas, & Delaware do not secede • Wait to see if Union attacks the South
