Characteristics of Protista • Most are unicellular • Some are simple multicellular Eukaryotes (have a nucleus) [do not have unique animal, plant, or fungi characteristics] • Have a cell membrane and a nucleus in their cytoplasm
Characteristics (Continued) • Some carry out photosynthesis • Contains some organisms that were one classified as plants, animals, or fungi • Most live in water areas like streams, ponds, lakes, oceans • Reproduce sexually and asexually
Characteristics (Continued) • Some feed on bacteria and bits of organic matter, others can make their own food (photosynthesis) • Move using flagella, cilia, and pseudopodia (False foot) • Move towards food and light • All different colors
Important Facts on Kingdom Protista • Once called the “Junk” Kingdom • Contains many economically important members: organisms that cause diseases such as Malaria • Approximately 60,000 living species of Protists • Three kinds of Protista: Animal-like, Plant-like, and Fungi-like • Most are microscopic
Animal-like Protists • Known as Protozoans • Most show a lot of movement • These Protists feed, rather than make their own food • Classified by how they move • Some examples are amoeba and paramecium
Plant-like Protists • Also called algae • Energy is gotten from the sun (photosynthesis) • Can be uni- or mutlicellular • Euglena and diatoms are examples
Fungus-like Protists • Feed on bacteria and decomposing items • Multicellular • Often brightly colored • Most of the time live in damp areas • Example: Slime mold
