ORGANELLE CLASS OF 2012 CELLWALL MOST LIKELY TO BECOME WEIGHT-LIFTING CHAMPION
Cell wall: • 10-100 times stronger than plasma membrane • Strengthened by lignin molecules • Protects the cell it surrounds • Provides support to plants
Primary cell wall Cytoplasm Secondary cell wall Plasmodesma • Cell wall surrounds the cell to protect it and provide skeletal support to the plant • Cell walls only in plants Plasma membrane • Primary cell wall:Thin, flexible wall of cellulose, polysaccharides, and proteins. Created first to let cell grow • Secondary cell wall:Added in laminated layers after primary cell wall for strength • Plasmodesmata: Channels between plant cells. Water, nourishment, and chemical messages shared between cells
The cell wall is like the walls of a room in a skyscraper because it protects the cell and provides support for the overall structure, like a skyscraper’s walls protect the things inside and allow the skyscraper to become taller.
