  1. Under the Influence of the Holy Ghost “… be filled with the Spirit” Ephesians 5:18(b)

  2. Under the Influence of the Holy Ghost • The Great Commission • The Great Commission, “go, baptize, teach” (Matthew 28:19-20) is the strategy by which the church is to saturate the community with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. • Purpose of the Church • The controlling purpose of the local church is to make disciples of all kinds of people. God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9)!

  3. Under the Influence of the Holy Ghost • Thus, we are to witness any time, all the time, in all • places. Apostle Paul shows us how to do this. He • witnessed everywhere, even in a prison at midnight • (Acts 16:25-31), and even on a sinking ship during a • dark and stormy day (Acts 27:20-25). • Remember, opportunities to share the Gospel of Jesus • Christ are numerous. The harvest is plenteous! • “By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples” John 15:8.

  4. Under the Influence of the Holy Ghost • Every born again believer in Jesus Christ has a responsibility to be involved in communicating and sharing the Good News about Jesus Christ. We call it witnessing! Witnessing is: • A testimony of your faith in Jesus Christ • Telling the Good News about Jesus to those that don’t know Him • Inviting and persuading others to commit their lives to Christ as their Savior

  5. Under the Influence of the Holy Ghost • But, in order to share our faith successfully, we must: • Depend on the Holy Spirit • (Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 2:4) • and • Be clean vessels (Isaiah 52:11) • .

  6. Under the Influence of the Holy Ghost • Paul in contrasting wine and the Holy Spirit shows that • just as wine controls a person completely, the Holy Spirit • also controls completely, and empowers us unto true • righteousness. The Spirit’s influence provides divine fuel • for a different, free, uninhibited life lived for God’s glory.

  7. Under the Influence of the Holy Ghost “BE FILLED” Ephesians 5:18 has a positive command: “Be filled with the Spirit.” What does that mean? First, let me tell you what that doesn’t mean. Being filled with the Spirit doesn’t mean to be indwelt with, to be baptized in, or to be sealed by the Holy Spirit.

  8. Under the Influence of the Holy Ghost “BE FILLED” Paul never says, “Be indwelt by the Spirit.” If you are saved, the Spirit already lives in you (1 Corinthians 6:19). Paul never says, “Be baptized in the Spirit.” If you’re saved, you were baptized in Him at your conversion (1 Corinthians 12:13). Paul never says, “Be sealed with the Spirit.” If you’re saved, you’ve already been sealed with the Spirit (Ephesians 1:13).

  9. Under the Influence of the Holy Ghost • All three events occurred the moment you were saved. • Instead, Paul’s command has our sanctification in view. The Greek verb written in the passive means “be continually letting or allowing the Spirit of God — who is already in you — control you.” • “Be Filled with the Spirit” is not a second work of grace, a one-time experience, or a step up to a higher level. It is the continual, ongoing experience of the Christian life (1 Thessalonians 4:4; 2 Thessalonians 2:13).

  10. Under the Influence of the Holy Ghost “Surrender and Submit” To be filled with the Holy Spirit means you are continually surrendering your will, your mind, your body, your time, your talents, and your treasures — every area of your life — to God’s control (Matthew 22:37; Romans 12:1). The context shows that every realm of our life will be affected when we are filled with the Spirit.

  11. Under the Influence of the Holy Ghost “Surrender and Submit” Notice how the Spirit-filled person gives evidence of their submission to Christ by submitting to others (Ephesians 5:21–6:9). The Spirit-filled wife submits to her husband. The Spirit-filled husband loves his wife. Spirit-filled children obey their parents. A Spirit-filled father doesn’t provoke his children to anger. A Spirit-filled employee works diligently for his employer. A Spirit-filled employer is fair with his employees. All those are manifestations of the Spirit-filled life.

  12. Under the Influence of the Holy Ghost “Surrender and Submit” “So,” you ask, “is this a “let go and let God” kind of thing?” Hardly; look at Colossians 3:16 for the answer to the question, “How do I surrender?” It says, “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you.” The effect of the word of Christ dwelling in you is the manifestation of what happens when you are filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:16-23).

  13. Under the Influence of the Holy Ghost “Surrender and Submit” It’s all there–singing, submission, love, obedience, gentle parenting, diligence, and fairness. Therefore, being filled with the Spirit is exactly the same thing as letting the word of Christ dwell in you richly. As you study God’s word, as it dwells in you richly, your thoughts become saturated with Christ. You become Christ-centered, Christ-conscious at all times–that’s what it is to be Spirit-filled.

  14. Under the Influence of the Holy Ghost When we are under the control of the Spirit of God, our thoughts, imagination, choices, and behavior will be occupied with Jesus Christ.  When we are under the influence of the Holy Spirit, we grow deeper and deeper in our understanding of the ways of God.  Our communion with Christ is deeper and closer with each day.  He will be constantly controlling our mind, our emotions, and our will.

  15. Living Under the Influence of the Holy Ghost When we are under the control of the Spirit, our prayer life is transformed, and we pray with the heart and vision of a righteous man (James 5:16). When the Holy Spirit is in control, we are of the same mind with God.  We are humble before God and man (Philippians 2:1-8). When we are filled with the Spirit, we have the mind and thus the attitude of Christ (Philippians 2:5).

  16. Living Under the Influence of the Holy Ghost When the Holy Spirit is in control we reproduce His likeness (Galatians 5:22-23). When we are under the influence of God’s presence, nothing really matters but Jesus Christ. When we are filled with the Spirit and therefore under His control, we live holy lives (Galatians. 5:16-18).

  17. Under the Influence of the Holy Ghost We have all of the Spirit we will ever need, but does He have all of us?  Am I yielding to Him?  Do I “keep on being filled”?  Has this command become a blessed habit to me? Are you “under the influence?”  What characterizes your life?  The idea behind the word “fill” is “control.”  The indwelling Spirit of God is the One who should continually control and dominate the life of the believer.
