  2. Form • the shell or mold that holds the details of music • gives music • shape • structure • organization • coherence • the organization of musical elements in time

  3. What Creates Form? • repetition • we get pleasure in recognizing something • determined by similarity and contrast • contrast • gives forward motion, conflict and change • opposition propels and develops musical ideas • variation • some features used again • other features changed

  4. Binary Form • composition divided into two large sections • A: statement • B: counterstatement • can repeat either or both of the sections • a typical binary harmonic plan: A Cadence I V B Cadence V I
