February Second Grade News Important February Dates 2/4 Stevie B’s Night 2/6 PTA 1st/2nd Grade performs 2/6 Progress Reports 2/11 Chick Fil A Night 2/14 Reading Circle/Valentine exchange/special snack 2/17-21 February Break 2/27 Biography Book Report Due/ Bruster’sNight 2/28 Reading Circle Units of study in February Reading- We will be reading stories and comparing and contrasting We will also learn the difference between facts and opinions. Grammar -We will be learning about adjectives and adverbs. Adjectives tell what kind, which one and how many. Adverbs tell how and usually end in “ly”. Writing-We will continue to write opinion and persuasive pieces this month. Math- We will finish regrouping as we subtract and add 3 digit numbers . We will begin a unit on geometry and three dimensional shapes. We will continue to improve our basic math facts. This is the foundation for upcoming multiplication facts, a third grade skill, so please keep those flash cards or websites going at home. Social Studies/Science-In conjunction with Black History month, we will study some famous African- Americans in Social Studies. We will also start a unit on government in Social Studies and a cover a brief overview of dental health .

We will be performing with First Grade. Valentine names are going home soon, if not already. We will have a special snack on February 14th as we exchange our valentines in class. Second grade will be taking a mock CRCT test this year to help prepare us for third grade. We will be utilizing the OAS computer system from last year. Look for a special ten digit number for your child’s log in. This sheet is attached to this newsletter. The password will be student. Please keep that yellow sheet handy, as we will be taking lots of practice tests in February and March. We will NOT have an AR goal in February due to the Biography Book Report assignment. Please help your child pick out a biography book on his/her reading level, but not necessarily an AR book. Help them read it and complete the report form. We will share these in class on Thursday, February 27for a grade. The kids always LOVE this assignment. Please remember to send a book from home each day to read at DEAR time. Also, please send a jacket or coat to school each day. We do try to go outside everyday.
