Early History • India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh all have an ancient history. • These 3 countries are growing rapidly in population. • The worlds largest civilizations began in what is now Pakistan. • Both Pakistan and Bangladesh have had political struggles since their independence • All of these countries are working to make there way into the modern world.
Struggling Economies • Subsistence Farming: Most farmers in Pakistan and Bangladesh worked in small plots of land and struggled to grow enough crops to feed their families. • There Government’s have tried to help modernize family methods but it has been a bit difficult.
Struggling Economies • Small Industry: Neither Pakistan or Bangladesh are highly industrialized. • Most factories are relatively small and lack the capital resources and markets required for expansion
Economic Challenges • Dependence on Farming: When growing crops for food and market reason. • You can make a lot of money by selling these different crops. (Fruit, Wheat grains, etc.) • Agricultural Improvements: The way how and who are growing crops, more farmers are modernizing into farming methods.
One Religion, Many People • Most people of Bangladesh and Pakistan are Muslim. • Islamic culture plays an important role in Pakistan and Bangladesh. • Both lands were key parts of the Muslim Mughal Empire. Which ruled the Indian Subcontinent for centuries. • Pakistan is more ethnically diverse than Bangladesh. v
Modern Life and Culture • Love of Poetry: Poetry is a special interest in both Pakistan and Bangladesh. • The tradition of oral literature is Strong. • Many Pakistanis remember long poems, and can recite them by heart. • Poetry readings are called mushairas . • Mushairas, can draw thousands of people, much like a rock concert does in some centuries.
Modern Life and Culture • Music and Dance: These are important forms of expression in Bangladesh and Pakistan. • Both countries share music, traditions, which are somewhat similar to India’s. • Qawwali – is a form of devotional singing preformed by Muslims known as Sufis.’ • Bangladesh has a long tradition of folk dances, costumed dancers act out Bengali myths, legends, and stories.
Vocabulary • Indus Valley Civilizations- A civilization that began around 2,500 B.C. • Partition- Division of British and India. • Kashmir- A territory. • Microcredit- A policy hat makes small loans available to the poor. • Entrepreneur- People who start and build a business. • Ramadan- A month long period of fasting from sunrise to sunset.
