  1. II Kings 15

  2. II Kings 15

  3. Azariah becomes king. • (2 Ki 15:1 NKJV) In the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Azariah the son of Amaziah, king of Judah, became king.

  4. A good father—A good son • (2 Ki 15:2-3 NKJV) He was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jecholiah of Jerusalem. {3} And he did what was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Amaziah had done,

  5. Good—except: • (2 Ki 15:4 NKJV) except that the high places were not removed; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.

  6. He became a leper • (2 Ki 15:5 NKJV) Then the LORD struck the king, so that he was a leper until the day of his death; so he dwelt in an isolated house. And Jotham the king's son was over the royal house, judging the people of the land.

  7. Azariah dies • (2 Ki 15:6-7 NKJV) Now the rest of the acts of Azariah, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? {7} So Azariah rested with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the City of David. Then Jotham his son reigned in his place.

  8. Israel continues with bad kings • (2 Ki 15:8-9 NKJV) In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah king of Judah, Zechariah the son of Jeroboam reigned over Israel in Samaria six months. {9} And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, as his fathers had done; he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin.

  9. Shallum becomes king of Israel • (2 Ki 15:10 NKJV) Then Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him, and struck and killed him in front of the people; and he reigned in his place.

  10. End of Zechariah • (2 Ki 15:11 NKJV) Now the rest of the acts of Zechariah, indeed they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

  11. The fourth generation. • (2 Ki 15:12 KJV) This was the word of the LORD which he spake unto Jehu, saying, Thy sons shall sit on the throne of Israel unto the fourth generation. And so it came to pass.

  12. The fourth generation. This was the word of the Lord - unto Jehu - God had promised to Jehu that his sons should sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation; and so it came to pass, for Jehoahaz, Joash, Jeroboam, and Zachariah, succeeded Jehu, to whom this promise was made. . . . Adam Clarke

  13. Jehoahaz, Joash, Jeroboam, and Zachariah,

  14. The fourth generation. • (2 Ki 10:30-31 NKJV) And the LORD said to Jehu, "Because you have done well in doing what is right in My sight, and have done to the house of Ahab all that was in My heart, your sons shall sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.”

  15. The fourth generation. But because he executed the Divine purpose with an uncommanded cruelty, therefore God cut his family short, according to his word by Hosea, I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu; and I will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel, Hos 1:4. -- Adam Clarke

  16. The quote from Hosea • (Hosea 1:4 NKJV) Then the LORD said to him: "Call his name Jezreel, For in a little while I will avenge the bloodshed of Jezreel on the house of Jehu, And bring an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel.

  17. A short reign • (2 Ki 15:13 NKJV) Shallum the son of Jabesh became king in the thirty-ninth year of Uzziah king of Judah; and he reigned a full month in Samaria.

  18. A short reign because he was killed • (2 Ki 15:14 NKJV) For Menahem the son of Gadi went up from Tirzah, came to Samaria, and struck Shallum the son of Jabesh in Samaria and killed him; and he reigned in his place.

  19. Menahem went up from Tirzah • Shallum ... reigned a full month — He was opposed and slain by Menahem, who, according to Josephus, was commander of the forces, which, on the report of the king’s murder, were besieging Tirzah, a town twelve miles east of Samaria, and formerly a seat of the kings of Israel. Raising the siege, he marched directly against the usurper, slew him, and reigned in his stead. JFB

  20. Tirzah

  21. The end for Shallum • (2 Ki 15:15 NKJV) Now the rest of the acts of Shallum, and the conspiracy which he led, indeed they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

  22. Menahem and his brutality • (2 Ki 15:16 NKJV) Then from Tirzah, Menahem attacked Tiphsah, all who were there, and its territory. Because they did not surrender, therefore he attacked it. All the women there who were with child he ripped open.

  23. Tiphsah appears to be at the northern end of the territory that Solomon had conquered.

  24. Menahem was wicked and evil • (2 Ki 15:17-18 NKJV) In the thirty-ninth year of Azariah king of Judah, Menahem the son of Gadi became king over Israel, and reigned ten years in Samaria. {18} And he did evil in the sight of the LORD; he did not depart all his days from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin.

  25. Assyria Gets involved. • (2 Ki 15:19 NKJV) Pul king of Assyria came against the land; and Menahem gave Pul a thousand talents of silver, that his hand might be with him to strengthen the kingdom under his control.

  26. Assyria Gets involved. • Pul came against the land — Elsewhere it is said “Ephraim [Israel] went to the Assyrian” [Hos_5:13]. The two statements may be reconciled thus: “Pul, of his own motion, induced, perhaps, by the expedition of Menahem against Thapsacus, advanced against the kingdom of Israel; then Menahem sent him a thousand talents in order not only to divert him from his plans of conquest, . . .

  27. Assyria Gets involved. • but at the same time to purchase his friendship and aid for the establishment of his own precarious sovereignty. So Menahem did not properly invite the Assyrian into the land, but only changed the enemy when marching against the country, by this tribute, into a confederate for the security of his usurped dominion.

  28. Assyria Gets involved. • This the prophet Hosea, less concerned about the historical fact than the disposition betrayed therein, might very well censure as a going of Ephraim to the Assyrians (Hos_5:13; Hos_7:1; Hos_8:9), and a covenant-making with Asshur” (2Ki_12:1) [Keil].

  29. A thousand talents of silver • A thousand talents of silver — Equal to $2,000,000. This tribute, which Menahem raised by a tax on the grandees of Israel, bribed Pul to return to his own country (see on 1Ch 5:26). JFB

  30. “Soak the rich” • (2 Ki 15:20 NKJV) And Menahem exacted the money from Israel, from all the very wealthy, from each man fifty shekels of silver, to give to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria turned back, and did not stay there in the land. • Was this “legal plunder”? Do law makers think they are above the law?

  31. The end comes for Menahem • (2 Ki 15:21-22 NKJV) Now the rest of the acts of Menahem, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? {22} So Menahem rested with his fathers. Then Pekahiah his son reigned in his place.

  32. “And he did evil” . . Moving to the end • (2 Ki 15:23-24 NKJV) In the fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekahiah the son of Menahem became king over Israel in Samaria, and reigned two years. {24} And he did evil in the sight of the LORD; he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin.

  33. Pekah becomes king • (2 Ki 15:25-26 NKJV) Then Pekah the son of Remaliah, an officer of his, conspired against him and killed him in Samaria, in the citadel of the king's house, along with Argob and Arieh; and with him were fifty men of Gilead. He killed him and reigned in his place. {26} Now the rest of the acts of Pekahiah, and all that he did, indeed they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

  34. How many more verses to this song? • (2 Ki 15:27-28 NKJV) In the fifty-second year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekah the son of Remaliah became king over Israel in Samaria, and reigned twenty years. {28} And he did evil in the sight of the LORD; he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin.

  35. It’s the beginning of the END! • (2 Ki 15:29 NKJV) In the days of Pekah king of Israel, Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria came and took Ijon, Abel Beth Maachah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali; and he carried them captive to Assyria.

  36. Israel’s last King! • (2 Ki 15:30-31 NKJV) Then Hoshea the son of Elah led a conspiracy against Pekah the son of Remaliah, and struck and killed him; so he reigned in his place in the twentieth year of Jotham the son of Uzziah. {31} Now the rest of the acts of Pekah, and all that he did, indeed they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

  37. Jotham reigns in Judah • (2 Ki 15:32-33 NKJV) In the second year of Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, Jotham the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, began to reign. {33} He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jerusha the daughter of Zadok.

  38. He did what was right • (2 Ki 15:34-35 NKJV) And he did what was right in the sight of the LORD; he did according to all that his father Uzziah had done. {35} However the high places were not removed; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. He built the Upper Gate of the house of the LORD.

  39. The end for Jotham • (2 Ki 15:36 NKJV) Now the rest of the acts of Jotham, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

  40. Judah beginning to have trouble. • (2 Ki 15:37-38 NKJV) In those days the LORD began to send Rezin king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah against Judah. {38} So Jotham rested with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the City of David his father. Then Ahaz his son reigned in his place.

  41. Closing Thoughts • (Prov 14:34 NKJV) Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people.

  42. God’s Goodness is not weakness • (Rom 2:4-5 NKJV) Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? {5} But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,
