  1. DISCIPLESHIP WEEK TWO THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN JOSHUA & MOSES

  2. RECAP • The commitment to discipleship ought to be a lifelong one. • We often get ‘so far’ in our development, and then tail off. • ‘Are you still growing?’

  3. INTRODUCTION • Key principle:We grow & thrive better in relationship and in community than we ever will on our own. • Who were/are the KEY PEOPLE involved in the development of your faith?

  4. FIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF GROWTH • Relationship of Nurture • Apprenticeship for Competence • Accountability for tasks • Submission for shaping • Wisdom for decision-making

  5. Relationship of Nurture • Exodus 24: 12 – 18. • Joshua would never forget his experience of glory on the mountain. • He would never forget the awesome power of God.

  6. Apprenticeship for Competence • Joshua was learning from Moses as his right hand man how to lead difficult people in challenging situations • There is ALWAYS a period of preparation once God has called you to something • Joshua saw Moses get it right, and he saw him get it wrong.

  7. Accountability for tasks • At one level, Moses’ life calling was simple: ‘take my people into the Promised Land’. • Easy to understand, but far more difficult to do. • Joshua saw first-hand the experience of trying to lead 2 million people!

  8. Submission for shaping • Joshua was faithful in his submission to Moses even when others were not. • Joshua watched Moses handle the people’s complaints, such as when they wanted meat rather than Manna. • He observed Moses exasperation in private, and his leadership skills in public.

  9. Wisdom for decision-making • Joshua was God’s choice to succeed Moses as leader of the Israelite nation. • God chose Him; Moses trained Him and God then anointed him. • Deuteronomy 31: 23 • Joshua 24: 31

  10. Application. • We are all on a journey – we want to hear & be faithful to God. • None of us has made it, but we are moving forward. • Each of us needs one another. • Can I encourage us to sow into one another’s lives, in a positive and fruitful way!

  11. Conclusion. • Are you still growing? • Are you & I still listening to God, • Are we still allowing Him to shape and develop us for service in His kingdom?
