ProcessingPlant for AddingValue to Citrus by-products Summary Theinstallationof a processingplant for treatingbyproductsofthe citrus agri-foodindustryhascontributed to generatevalueaddedofsuchwasteproductsandtheir alternative use as input for animalfeed, essentialoilsandtreatedwater. Background Citrotecno is a companythatwasborn as aninitiativeof a groupofentrepreneursfrom Valencia, traditionallyengagedintheagricultureandlivestocksectors. Theircommitment to thesesectorsandconstantsearch for innovativesolutionshas led to theidentificationanddevelopmentofmoderntechnologiesandresearchprocessesthathelpaddressthespecificneedsandissuesin a more efficientandeffectivemanner. Objective Theoverallobjectiveofthisprojectwastheintegratedprocessingofresidualsgeneratedfromthe citrus processingintheagri-foodindustry. Throughthisinvestment citrus residuals are collectedandprocessedsuch as pulpandpeel. As a resultby-products are extractedthatareutilised as raw material for animalfeed, second-generationbioethanol, D-limonene, essentialoilsandpurifiedwaterthat is suitable for drinkingandirrigation. Mainactivities Theprojectsinvolvestheconstruction, installationandrunningof a processingplant for theextractionof citrus by-products. Citrotecnowillcontactmanufacturersofjuicesandhorticultureproducerswho are interestedinusingthistechnology for obtaininghighvalue citrus by-products. Theprocessingplantwasdesignedwith a capacityofaround 15 to 25 tonsperhour, which is believed to bethe most costeffectiveandable to haveanadequatereturn on investment. Results & Benefits Thisnewandmoderntechnologyprocessingplantwasreceivedwithanencouragingresponsefromoperatorsinthesector. Ithelpedcompaniesobtainenvironmentalcertification for treatingwaste/by-products. As a result, there is a highdemand to procure thisequipment. It is estimatedthattheplantwillreach a capacityofabout 40 tons/hourwith 6,800/7,500 hoursof work everyperyear.
