What is a participle? • A participle is a word formed from a verb that can function as part of a verb phrase.
Kinds of participles • Present participle: A present participle is a verb that ends with –ing. • Past participle: A past participle is a verb that ends with –ed.
Examples • Present participle: The soccer players played a soccer game yesterday and won. The criminal robbed a bank the past week. • Past participle: The girl is swimming in the pool. The man is playing basketball with his friends.
What is a regular and irregular verb? • Regular verbs: They always end in –ed. • Irregular verbs: The ending of the word always changes.

What is a dangling participle?Why are dangling participles bad? • Dangling participles are tricky words or phrases that change the meaning of a sentence. • Dangling participles are bad because they could change the meaning of your sentence and make the sentence not make sense. • Example: Bad sentence- Lying out on the grass, the trees were beautiful. Good sentence- Lying out on the grass, I thought the trees were beautiful.
