HP’s SdS in 3 minutes NAME DATE
Summary • HP’s Software-defined Storage (StoreVirtual VSA / StoreOnce VSA) Strategyis ideal for customers with a limited budget that would benefit from starting out with or using a low-cost storage solution that easily migrate to a larger storage, if needed, in the future. • Remember – $ = C + P + F + A
“Software-defined storage” (SDS) • What is SDS? • Software-defined storage (SDS) is the separation of storage controller functions, data protection, and advanced data services from the underlying physical storage hardware. SDS leverages storage inside server hosts or possibly standalone storage systems with limited capabilities. SDS is typically deployed as a Virtual Machine in a Virtual Infrastructure. • SDS utilizes industry standard hardware. The hardware is (typically) dedicated for storage. • SDS offers a single storage management interface for all storage hardware. • SDS introduces “scale out” functionality as software that can be easily added to additional nodes. • SDS separates storage hardware purchases from storage software purchases. • The primary consideration for utilizing SDS is COST. • Both storage virtualization and software-defined storage abstract the storage services from the storage hardware, allowing them to provide those services across a variety of disk and solid-state storage systems. Storage virtualization, however, most often functions on a dedicated piece of hardware. • NOTE: Software-defined storage is part of a larger industry trend that includes software-defined networking (SDN) and software-defined datacenters (SDDC).
“Software-defined storage” (SDS) • Is SDS right for you? Ask yourself the following…. • Do you have a limited budget that would benefit from starting out with or using a low-cost storage solution that easily migrate to a larger SAN, if needed, in the future? • Do you have existing server or storage hardware that you would like to repurpose? • Do you have remote or branch offices with data that you would like to replicate back to the main site? • Would you like a high performance SSD tier without incurring considerable expense? • Do you want a solution that does not require specific hardware from a specific vendor? • Are you looking to reduce/minimize your CapExand OpExcosts?
HP’s “Software-defined storage” (SdS) • Do you want to leverage your own x86 server hardware? • StoreVirtual VSA – Primary/Secondary Storage • Hypervisor-based version of the StoreVirtual Appliance (VMware or Hyper-V). • All inclusive feature set. • Low cost, feature-rich, high availability. • StoreOnce VSA – Nearline/Offline Storage • Hypervisor-based version of the StoreOnce Appliance (VMware). • VTL or NAS target. • Centralized management of all backup and copy activities • Low cost data deduplication. • StoreVirtual VSA DUPLICATES data to maximize Primary Storage AVAILABILITY. • StoreOnce VSA DEDUPLICATES data to maximize Nearline Storage CAPACITY.
Unlock Your Storage with HP ProLiant program FREE StoreVirtual VSA with the purchase of a ProLiant Server • Customers can download a FREE 1TB license of StoreVirtual VSA software • License limited in scalability to 3-node cluster • Includes all StoreVirtual features except Adaptive Optimization • Can easily upgrade online to larger capacity VSA licenses • Platforms in program: • ProLiant servers focused on virtualized environments • Gen8 Server Models include: BL420c, BL460c, BL465c, BL660c, DL320e Gen8 v2, DL360p, DL380p, DL385p, DL560, and ML350p • The license has a 3 year term • During this term customer will be able to update the software • After 3 years customers will need to purchase a StoreVirtual license • Support only via Community Forum - www.hp.com/go/vsasupport • Vanity URL: www.hp.com/go/unlockVSA
