  1. What Kind of Teaching Am I Prepared to Do and How Do I Get Started? Teaching …or, how to prevent this from happening to you. Tim Stearns - Biological Sciences, Genetics

  2. Teaching - Why do it? Have to do it Want to do it

  3. Teaching - Why do it? David Botstein

  4. Teaching - Why do it? A Conundrum: Modern biology is flourishing, with new ideas, new technology, a new industry, new challenges, new productivity (automation) and even continuing new funding (doubling of the NIH budget; HHMI; DOD). Never has it been more exciting. But… Our educational system appears to be failing to attract young Americans to the study of biology (or to any other science). The excitement is not being communicated, particularly to undergraduates.

  5. Teaching - Why do it? Conclusion: we are failing to interest American undergraduates

  6. Problem: very few of the best students consider a career in basic research (and teaching). Teaching - Why do it? Why (in Biology): Overwhelming pre-med bias among biology majors (>80%) Dreary prerequisite courses Perception that science is carried out by lone eccentrics
