Emergency Phone Numbers • 8999 for Main Hospital and Pavilion • 9-911 for Wyatt Clinic and Women’s & Children’s Clinic
Three Classes of Fire Extinguishers Class A = Ashes wood, paper, fabric or trash Class B = Boil flammable liquids and gasses Class C = Current electrical fires **Multi-class extinguishers can be used on more than one class of fire.** P.A.S.S. Pull the pin, Aim the hose, Squeeze and Sweep at base of fire
R.A.C.E. • Rescue all persons • (Sound) Alarm • Contain fire • Evacuate or Extinguish
Infant/Pediatric Abduction • Prevention is the best defense against infant/child abductions. • Report any suspicious activity immediately to the charge nurse or Security at Ext. 7000. Suspicious activity includes: • Repeat visitors with interest in the babies • People who ask about the hospital layout, stairs, exits, etc. • Someone taking hospital uniforms or name badges • Someone who carries and infant in the hospital halls, rather that pushing an infants crib or isolette • Someone who carries large packages off the maternity unit • In the event of an abduction, call 8999, and cover all exits…
Hospitalized Inmates • Students will not be assigned to care for Inmates, do not attempt to go into an inmate’s room • Two TDC officers will guard the inmate patient • Inmates are not transported within the hospital without TDC and NWTHS hospital Security present • Do not attempt to enter an elevator with TDC, inmate and Security present • All inmates are in 5-point restraints that remain in place for the protection of staff and officers
Hazardous Material Spill • Small spills of hazardous materials usually represent no hazard • Proper Protective Equipment must be used to prevent exposure • Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheets (M.S.D.S.) information on the NWTHS Intranet site or Laboratory for instructions on clean up and disposal of chemicals used at NWTHS
Infection Control The Infection Chain: • The first link- A source of germs • The second Link-A way to spread • The third link-A susceptible person *Hand washing is the single most effective action you can take in breaking the Infection Chain!
Hand Hygiene • Wash hands vigorously with soap and warm (not hot) water for at least 10-15 seconds, rinse thoroughly • Blot dry hands with paper towel and use towel to turn off faucet • Alcohol rubs/hand sanitizers are NOT appropriate when hands are visibly soiled, or when caring for a patient with ‘C-diff’ • Even if gloves are worn, wash your hands after removing gloves • NO ARTIFICIAL NAILS are to be worn while giving direct patient care. NO exceptions
Standard Precautions Treat All Blood and Body fluids as though they were infected with pathogens! Types of Precautions: Isolation Room Signage • Contact Precautions: Green sign • Droplet Precautions: Orange sign • Airborne Precautions: Pink sign * You must follow instructions on the signs to protect you, your patient and other staff members from contagious pathogens (germs).
NEUTROPENIC Precautions • This type of isolation guards a patient who is susceptible to infection • A ‘STOP’ sign will be posted at the patient’s door • This precaution is a way to keep the pathogen and the patient apart
Bloodborne Pathogens Three serious Bloodborne Pathogens: • HIV, Human Immunodeficiency Virus • HBV, Hepatitis B Virus • HCV, Hepatitis C Virus These can be transmitted by: • Direct contact by broken skin and body fluid • Needle stick injury, cut, bite or puncture wound • Receiving contaminated blood or blood products • Childbirth
OccupationalExposure • IF you are exposed to blood or body fluids while at the hospital, follow these steps: • Decontaminate the affected area immediately; washing with antibacterial soap and water (eyes, nose and mouth: rinse/flush with saline or water) • Notify your Supervisor/Instructor immediately • Contact the Occupational Health Nurse
Patient Confidentiality • Each of our patients has the right to privacy and to confidential handling of their healthcare information. We have the Responsibility of protecting our Patient’s rights. • HIPAA Compliance: The privacy rule imposes restrictions on the use and disclosure of personal health information • Discuss patient information privately, do not discuss with those not directly involved in that patient’s care Remember, keeping patent health information private is not only a matter of patient satisfaction-it’s the Law
Ethics • All persons who work in the NWTHS facility share in the responsibility of observing a code of ethics Code of Ethics • Requires honesty and personal integrity in all human activities • Maintain confidentiality at all times • Strive for beneficence and non-malfeasance at all times NWTHS Ethics Hotline ext.3600

Student Parking at NWTHS • Parking Policy is strictly enforced by the Security department, and tickets are issued to violators • All Students must use the designated employee parking areas

NWTHS is Tobacco Free • Effective January 8, 2008 NWTHS is a completely tobacco free campus. This includes all hospital property such as parking lots, courtyards and porch areas, as well as indoor areas. • Students as well as employees are held to a zero tolerance policy. • Smoking in vehicles is not permitted.
National Patient Safety Goals • The purpose of the Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals is to promote patient safety. These change from time to time, and it is our responsibility as healthcare providers to be aware of the current Safety Goals and to comply with them. • They are available to us on the Joint Commission’s web site http://www.jointcommission.org • There is a Joint Commission link on the NWTHS Intranet homepage that you can access while at the hospital.
