Ethos • from the Greek for character, ethos is related to the word ethical • an appeal to credibility or authority • speaker/writer must convince the audience that he/she is honest, well-informed, and fair • speaker/writer avoids negatively charged words and/or verbal attacks • speaker/writer uses clearly reliable sources and recognized expert opinions

Logos • from the Greek word for word or thought, logos is related to the word logic • an appeal to logic or reason • writer/speaker supports claims with specific, concrete data • writer/speaker uses provable facts and statistics • inductive reasoning: moving from specific to general • deductive reasoning: moving from general to specific

  6. Pathos • from the Greek word for suffering or feeling, pathos is related to the word pathetic • an appeal to emotion • writer/speaker uses emotion to strengthen an argument • personal experience, descriptive example, careful word choice
