Codes And Conventions In Thriller Movies Craig Dennett
Mirrors • Mirrors can be used in a thriller to look into the character, showing how they are on the inside. • Also they can show the camera how the character see themselves • They can be used to show inside the characters subconscious or soul, giving the viewer a different image of the character. • An example of use of mirrors in thrillers is ‘Donnie Darko’ (Richard Kelly 2001) where Jake Gyllenhaals character stares into the mirror, and enters his subconscious.
Shadows • Shadows are used in thriller movies to create atmosphere, and suspense. • They can be quite scary as a viewer to see a shadowy figure, walking around….. ‘sneakily’ • Creating suspense is a important thing in a thriller movie. • An example of this is in frankenstein (Kenneth Branagh 1994)
Black And White • Black and white is a great thing for thrillers, it can be used during a flashback. • Also a black and white shot, with one bright colour, perhaps red, for blood is very useful, can really emphasise the blood. • Schindlers list( Steven Speilburg1993) is a good example of using black and white footage, to great effect.
Obtrusive Editing • This is used to accentuate the tension, and add to the excitement. This is used in lots of movies, really good in panic room David Fincher 2002, where the camera weaves in and out of objects, showing lots of viewpoints, showing the mithodical way the burglars break in.
