  1. Champaign Lion's Chatter (Click here to go to our website) 28 March 2012 Call to Order — President David Lin called the meeting to order and led in the Pledge of Allegiance.

  2. Invocation - Dave Hunter - Hear us, Lord, we praise Thee. Hear us, Lord, we thank Thee. Hear us, Lord, we pray for peace. Amen. Vittles - Salad & Toppings, Pork Tenderloin, Mashed Potatoes & Gravy, Vegetables, Rolls & Butter, Banana Split Dessert.

  4. Charlie introduced our speaker, David Leake,who kindly sent notes on his presentation.

  5. Dave Leake, director of the William M. Staerkel Planetarium at Parkland College, gave a talk called "What's Up?" which gave us an update on current events in astronomy, current happenings in the sky

  6. and programming at the planetarium.

  7. Dave talked about the plentiful planets now seen in the sky,

  8. including Jupiter and Venus in the west, Mars high in the southeast and Saturn rising a bit after sunset in the east.

  9. He made special mention of the transit of Venus, which will occur just after 5pm on Tuesday, June 5.

  10. A transit occurs when an inner planet appears to move across the face of the Sun.

  11. Transits of Venus occur in pairs with the last one being in 2004. The next one won't happen until 2117!

  12. The CU Astronomical Society will hold free (and safe) observing of this event at Parkland College.

  13. Dave also mentioned that the Mars "Curiosity" rover will land

  14. in Gale Crater on Mars in August.

  15. Mercury is in the news with the Messenger spacecraft celebrating one year in orbit around this planet.

  16. Findings include a topographical map of the planet (which shows a lowered north polar region), a massive outer core, and possible water ice in the shadowed areas of craters at the north pole.

  17. Dave also discussed the increase in solar activity

  18. and how this can result in the Northern Lights.

  19. Current shows at the planetarium include "Black Holes: the Other Side of Infinity" and "Secrets of the Sun."

  20. and, after some HVAC work in June, they'll premier "Cosmic Colors: An Adventure Along the Spectrum." In mid-April, they'll open "The Planets,"
