Invocation – Dave Hunter - Great God, Lord of all, for this food and for blessings without end, we thank Thee. Amen.Vittles – Baked ham, mac & cheese, pearl couscous, mixed vegetables, with cheese sauce, salad and toppings, bread and butter, chocolate mousse cake, tea and coffee.
Birthdays – none. Lions Report -- Jim Smith is out of rehab and we are so glad to have him back; If you are ill or know a fellow Lion that is under the weather, please call Pat Bryan at 586-4535.
Jim Smith was back today after being in rehab for over 6 months. We were really glad to see him.
Announcements – Marvin Paulsen, Zone chair, reported that he had visited the Sidney Lions who are going to have a Fish Fry and then in May will sell roses for Mother’s day.
Rich King reported we need 30 volunteers for the Water Station at the C-U Marathon on April 28th. The State Convention in May will be held in Decatur.
Program – Charlie Osborne introduced Jonathan Ross, Director of Automotive Technology at Parkland College, who spoke on Hybrid Technology.
Jon graduated from Monticello and received a B.S. from SIU and later a M.S. from EIU.
Parkland has been training technicians for more than 40 years. They work closely with the high schools.
The engine stops when the car stops and starts when you release the brake. It has electric steering and regenerative braking which recaptures energy from vehicle inertia, so the motor is converted into a generator to recharge the battery.
There are 3 Classifications of the hybrids: Series – parallel; Prius uses engine, motor or both. Prius
Parallel – Honda Civic uses an electric motor just to assist the gas engine.
The Chevrolet Volt uses a gasoline engine to charge the battery and an electric motor drives the wheels.
The Belt Alternator System is different and used by the Buick.
The car uses very High voltage and requires new service equipment and unique operation modes.
There are some offsets to using the hybrid, such as higher cost, but there are some Government tax incentives. The electric components and service precautions are problems and there are potential problems with the engine turning on at odd times to recharge the battery.
Tail Twister – Paul Hendren asked Weldon Garrelts to carry the bucket. Weldon was also fined for having won the lottery;
Fred Greffe’s table for not knowing what bird is not a team; and Frank Duff for plugging a petition drive.
