MARINE AND OFFSHORE CABLES Marine and offshore cables are communication cables which are used to transmit energy below the surface of the ocean. These are called "offshore" since under salt water (ocean arms, coasts, straits, etc.) they typically hold electricity, but under fresh water (large lakes and rivers) it is also possible to use submarine power cables. Examples of the above occur that link the mainland with the St. Lawrence River's broad islands.
The aim of marine power cables is to hold high-voltage electric current. A concentric arrangement of inner conductor, electrical insulation and protective layers (resembling a coaxial cable design) is the electrical heart. In addition to electrical conductors, current three-core cables (for example, for linking offshore wind turbines) also bear optical fibres for data transmission or temperature measurement.
General Cable provides a wide range of low- and medium-voltage power, control and instrumentation cables for the top-end offshore industry. Our cables have been shipped on FPSOs, FSO, drilling and development platforms to shipyards around the world to be built.
