Qualifications • All 50 states require Public School teachers to be licensed by the State Board of Education. • Licensure is not required for Private Schools.
Required Education Post Secondary • Varies widely, depending on the subject and education institution • Most common--bachelor’s degree plus work experience • Four-year colleges and universities want a doctoral degree for full-time, tenure- track employment
Required Education K-12 Teachers • Must have a bachelor’s degree • Complete an approved teacher training program • Prescribed number of subject and education credits • Supervised practice teaching • Some states require technology training • Most states require a master’s degree • Must pass a competency test in basic skills
Required Education Vocational Teachers • Same requirements as their academic counterparts • However, experience is important– may be licensed without bachelors degree if can demonstrate expertise in their field
Required Education Pre-School Teachers • Some states require a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education • Other states require an associate’s degree • Others require a certification by a nationally recognized authority--CDA
