Aug. 13, 2013 Coordination Group Meeting Geologic Data Subcommittee -- Update to Coordination Group David R. Soller, Chair Geologist, U.S. Geological Survey (703) 648-6907 drsoller@usgs.gov
Introduction The purpose of the Geologic Data Subcommittee is to coordinate geologic data-related activities (development, use, sharing, and dissemination), mostly among Federal agencies. Members: • Dave Soller, USGS, Chair • Jerry Bernard, USDA • Mark Crowell, FEMA • Melody Holm, USFS • Lucy Kuizon, BLM • John LaBrecque, NASA • Don McKay, ISGS • Vince Santucci, NPS • George Sharman, NOAA • ??, BOEM • ??, USACE • …
Convergence on a geologic map database design • Objective ranges from a set of general specs. for field and table names, to a single, tightly-defined database implementation • Leading candidate for standard design is “NCGMP09” (http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Info/standards/NCGMP09/)
Convergence on a geologic map database design • NCGMP09 is intended for publication of single maps, but could be extended to Enterprise-level design • On behalf of Subcommittee, USGS, NPS, and AASG are evaluating and implementing this design
Convergence on a geologic map database design • Monthly telecons are held, to discuss technical issues related to implementation • Progress report on NCGMP09 implementation to be released this Fall
Status of the FGDC Geologic Map Symbolization Standard • User support for the Standard is provided by USGS. Includes addressing technical questions, requests for paper copies, and suggestions for additions/corrections to the Standard • An update to the Standard is anticipated, in collaboration with State geological surveys, Geological Survey of Canada, and perhaps ESRI.
NGDA Data Themes and Data Sets • As previously noted, we need to understand the precise definitions of “data theme”, “data set”, “category”, … • Then, we can plan to participate
NGDA Data Themes and Data Sets • Tentatively these data themes or data sets fall under the purview of the Geologic Data Subcommittee: • Geologic mapping (USGS, Dave Soller) • Sand and gravel, offshore (BOEM, Doug Vandegraft) • Wells, offshore (BOEM, Doug Vandegraft) • … others might be systematically identified, in FY14…
Next Steps • Continue to work toward standard geologic map database design • Determine whether the Symbolization Standard should be revised • Find additional members (e.g., BOEM, USACE) • Resolve questions regarding NGDA Geology Data Themes / Datasets
