Future Courses Math 110 is a Terminal Course It is absolutely imperative that you understand that Math 110 is NOT a prerequisite for any other math class! If you need to take Math 112 (or might change to a major that requires Math 112), but did not place into that course, you should drop Math 110 now and take Math 100 instead, then Math 112, etc.

Calculator • Your own scientific calculator • For use in class, on assignments, and on tests • For tests, ONLY the Casio fx-260 School or the calculator available on the computer will be allowed. • Using a different hand-held calculator on a test will be treated as academic misconduct.
Clickers • You will be required to have a Turning Technologies Response Unit (or “clicker”) in class with you every day for • Recording attendance • Participation in class • Clickers may be purchased at a campus book store. • If you already have a clicker for another class, that will work for this class too. • Register your clicker in our Blackboard learn course right away.NOTE: I MAY NOT DO THIS SO DON’T BUY A CLICKER JUST FOR THIS CLASS IF YOU DON’T ALREADY HAVE ONE.

Access Codes Every student must have a MyLabsPlus access code. • Comes packaged with the textbook or may be purchased separately • The code gives you access to an online textbook, video lectures, examples of assignments and many more useful tools to help you be successful in this course. • Students repeating Math 110 must go to the MTLC to get a new code. You do NOT need to purchase a new access code. • Temporary code available in software for 21 days.
Course Grades • Grades will be assigned in this course. Possible grades in this course are A, B, C (+/-) or NC. • A grade of NC means you receive no credit for this course. You must take the course again, but an NC does not affect your GPA. • The last day to withdraw from the course is Wednesday, 3/20. No withdrawals will be given after this date.
Course Grades • Class Attendance (1 pt per class) 25 pts • Lab (MTLC) Attendance (1 pt per week) 9 pts • Homework average 150 pts • Quiz average 150 pts • Study Plan 66 pts • 4 tests (150 points each) 600 pts TOTAL 1000 pts Students must earn a minimum of 700 points to successfully pass this course.
Class Attendance • After this week, regular class meetings will beevery Monday and Wednesday at the scheduled class time for 50 minutes. • Class attendance is recorded by the instructor via “clicker”. • 1 pts per class; 25 pts total. • Attention and participation required • No cell phones or laptops out during class • Must attend entire class
Math Lab (MTLC) Attendance Math 110 is a 3-hour-credit course. Since class meets only 2 hours each week, for the third hour you are required to spend at least 60 minutes per week doing math work in the MTLC. • Must swipe ACT card in AND out for time in MTLC to count • May use the MTLC any time it’s open. (You are not required to be there particularly at your scheduled lab time on Friday.)

Common Rules for the MTLC • The MTLC is a Math classroom. Be courteous and considerate of fellow students. • Do not hesitate to ask questions if you need help. The instructors and tutors in the MTLC are there to help you!! • Math work only. • No food, drinks, tobacco products ,cell phone use, loud music, profanity, or companions.

Homework • Graded homework assignments for each section (17 total) • Deadline shown in syllabus and software • May save, close, and return to complete. • Homework exercises may be worked and reworked as many times as needed. Click on “Similar Exercise” to rework an exercise. • 3 lowest homework grades will automatically be dropped at end of semester. • Average of remaining homework grades will count for 150 points.
Quizzes • Graded quiz for each section (18 total); deadline. • Do not click the “Submit” button until you have completed the entire quiz. • 2 attempts on each quiz. Only higher score will be used in course grade calculation. • Can review your quiz only immediately after submitting. No help during quiz, but get help if needed during review. • 3 lowest quiz grades will automatically be dropped at end of semester. • Average of remaining quiz grades will count for 150 points.
Study Plan • Good review before tests. • Quiz performance informs study plan. Work on a section only after completing the homework and quiz. • Unique to you based on your quiz performance. • Due by noon on 5/3 (last day of exams). • Worth 66 points at end of semester.
Test Deadlines Math 110 test deadline days will be on THURSDAYS, but you will choose what time to take the test on each deadline day. Test 1: Thursday, February 7 Test 2: Thursday, February 28 Test 3: Thursday, March 21 Test 4: Thursday, April 18 Optional Final Exam: Sunday – Friday, April 28 – May 3 (You may choose day and time for Final Exam.) We will discuss Testing in more detail closer to Test 1.
Make-up Policy • Missed homework or quiz deadline • Score for incomplete HW or quiz = as completed at deadline • Score for HW or quiz not started before deadline = 0 • Will be considered in your 3 lowest drops at end. • Missed test • Must petition as soon as possible (mtlc.ua.edu/petition). • If the petition request is approved, makeup test may be scheduled for Thursday or Friday after test week.
Replacement Policy • The Math 110 Final Exam is NOT REQUIRED. • Option to take a Comprehensive Final Exam and have that score replace the lowest test score. • Zero test grades due to unexcused absences or academic misconduct will not be automatically replaced. • If a test is missed, fill out a petition (mtlc.ua.edu/petition) as soon as possible to explain and request a make up.
Working at Home • Students can work in the software from home. • Use the MyMathLab Browser Check in the software and install all necessary plug-ins (one time only). • Homework and quizzes may be completed at home. • Work well ahead of deadlines to be safe. • If you have any trouble, come to the MTLC right away to complete your assignments on time. • Deadlines will not be extended because of home computer/internet issues. • Tests must be completed in the MTLC.

Software Log In Information Registration in the software has already been done for you. Two log in options in syllabus, top of page 2. • Log in option 1: • Log into myBama, go to your Blackboard Learn courses, click on Math 110. • Log in option 2: • Website: www.ua.mylabsplus.com • Username = crimson email prefix (ex: jksmith) • Password = CWID (ex: 12345678) • You will need your MyLabsPlusaccess code in order to get to the math content for the first time in the software.
Before our next class • Get an access code (or be prepared to buy it with a credit/debit card through the software) • Log into software (even if you don’t have your code yet.) • For help, go to the MTLC. • Take the Syllabus Quiz • Use your syllabus during the quiz! (Link to full syllabus available in software.) • Retake it if necessary to get 100%! Unlimited number of attempts. • Get a notebook – for class notes and assignment work.
Final thoughts • Make the commitment now to do what it takes to be successful in this course: • Attend class and MTLC regularly • Complete every assignment • Stay on schedule (Allow plenty of time to do your best!) • Get help when you need it – MTLC Staff and CAS Staff are there FOR YOU!
