Satellite infrastructure quality requirements • Services provided over the Network • Non Real Time Services • Messaging, File Transfers, Presence, Image Share • SMS, MMS • Real Time Services • VoIP • Video Call • Streaming • Network Performance Parameter • Latency Effect on VoIP Call Quality • Latency < 150ms Voice Quality Degration barely noticeable • Latency > 300ms Voice Quality Degraded • Bandwidth Effect on VoIP Call Quality • Broadband connection will work right as long as • Not Spotty • Not shared to many other communication applications WHAT ABOUT THE COST ?
Satellite infrastructure options OPTION 1 : INMARSAT • Inmarsat's satellite coverage is provided by just Four Satellites • These orbit the earth at very high altitudes (over 22,000 miles, incredibly) • ‘Geostationary Orbit‘ : remain fixed in the same position in the sky all the time • Clear line of sight to any one of the satellites then you will be able to make and receive calls • Because Inmarsat's satellites are in a fixed position, you must move to satellite • if you can't "see" the satellite from where you are then you can't use your phone - simple as. • Have to move yourself to a different location where a clear line of sight to the satellite is available OPTION 2 : IRIDIUM • Iridium's satellite coverage is provided by just 66 Satellites • Around the earth in multiple orbits at a much lower level (485 miles) • At this lower orbit the satellites are constantly moving in the sky • each will take 10-15 minutes to pass from horizon to horizon, with one passing overhead every seven minutes or so • With Iridium, the satellites move to you • if your view to the satellite is currently obscured, it's only a matter of time before the next one comes into view and you can make your call.
INMARSAT SELECTED as SATELLITE INFRASTRACTURE HOW TO CONNECT ?
