Background • The book begins by identifying Nebuchadnezzar as the king of the Assyrians • The book was written to convey a message not record historical facts • Nebuchadnezzar seeks revenge on those who had not supported him
General Holofernes • Holofernes is selected to carry out the wishes of the king • He is angered by the defiance of Judah • He is smitten and outwitted by Judith
The Victory of Judith • Holofernes is decapitated by Judith when he is overtaken by too much wine • She cuts off his head with his own sword • She hangs his head on the outside wall of Bethulia • Assyrian army easily defeated by army of Judah
Judith As Heroine • Judith is celebrated • Visited by Joakim, the High Priest • Curtains are burned as offering • She lives as a widow to 105 years old
