What Is the Purpose of a Note? • Make sense of information • To learn: Do not copy-put in YOUR words Put information together Connect old information to new ideas
How Do I Take Good Notes? • Don’t write in complete sentences. Ex: The two biggest rivers are the Yangtze and the Yellow Rivers biggest =Yangtze and Yellow Rivers • No need to write with beginning capitals or ending periods.
Ex: Pug dogs are both black and brindle in color..pugs brindle black, color • The second most important habit is exercising your pug sport after feeding it twice a day most important habit feeding–, second important habit – excersizing
Keyword Notes • Make sure the keywords are not too brief. You want to understand your notes when you reread them later. Ex: live in apartments(too brief) live in apartments: don’t need big spaces, don’t bark much, small in size
Quoted Notes • Sometimes it’s necessary to write down the exact text you read. Just make sure you use quotation marks to set off these direct quotes and write down who said that. Ex: “A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people.” Gandhi
Where Can I Find Good Notes? • Look for TEXT FEATURES in your sources. • table of contents • index • headings • subheadings • photo /pictures • captions • Sidebars • bold words • The topic sentence ( claim statement) in a paragraph
