Title: QWOP • Developer: Bennett Foddy • Genre: Casual Skill Game • Price: Free • Requirements: A computer with internet and flash
Overview • QWOP was originally created in November 2008 by Bennett Foddy for his site Foddy.net. • The main purpose of gameplay is to get to the 100m finish line • The game helped Foddy's site reach 30 million hits • Since then, a 2-player version of this game has been created
Story • Players play as an athlete named “Qwop” who is representing South Africa in a 100-meter sprint event at the Olympics. • Player’s Role Using only the Q, W, O, and P keys, players must control the movement of Qwop's legs to make him move forward. The Q and W keys each drive one of the runner's thighs, while the O and P keys work the runner's calves.
User Interface • Simple • Only 5 letters on the keyboard needed to play this game • Gameplay • A pretty calm game however pressing buttons in a certain order can cause the runner to do flips or fall violently
Installation • No installation necessary • Scoring • Score is in meters up to the tenths place • Sound and Music • When the runner hits the ground, a grunting sound effect is heard
Bugs • Runner gets stuck in certain positions that allow the user to slowly drag him all the way to the finish line • Runner bounces back unrealistically • QWOP Bug
The good • Addicting • Free • Simple controls • Great for passing time • QWOP Winner
The Bad • Too difficult to play • Very easy to get angry at this game • Track is not long enough • Bugs ruin the game • No lasting appeal • Hit or miss physics
Audience • Casual gamer • Enjoyable by people of all ages • Great for passing time at work or at school • 2-player mode will appeal more to competitive gamers
Comparison • Very few games in the same genre • GIRP • Made by same developers • They had similar controls, just different 4 keys on the keyboard • GIRP is even more difficult • GIRP never got as popular as QWOP did • QWOP was overall the better game
Strengths • Addicting • Simple • Weaknesses • Steep learning curve • No leaderboard • Possible Improvements • Improve the weaknesses • Make the track longer than 100m • Customizable character
Summary • Is it worth your time? • Yes!
