  8. Hotel Names Some famous Hotels have given name to a particular meal orbeverage, “Waldorf Astoria”(New York) “Waldorf Salad” was first created (celery, apples, walnuts, mayonnaise, lettuce)

  11. Since the beginning of time, people have Travelled for: Commerce, Religion, Family, Health, Immigration, Education & Recreation

  12. Egypt being the world's oldest civilization, is probably one of the oldest vacation spots in the World Early Greeks, Romans and others came to Egypt to see the wonders of mankind's earliest triumphs. (Fun)

  13. What we do know is that under the influence of the Roman Empire, “Inns and Hotels” began Catering for Travellers, in an effort to encourage visitors. (Follow the $)

  14. The first Inn located in America was recorded in the year 1607 Since then the U. S. have lead the way with many first’s in the Hospitality/Hotel Industry Entertainment (Disney World, Sea World)

  15. Since 1607, a surge of Hotels flooded across the rest of the world with prominent names such as today: Groups/Chains Radisson, Holiday Inn, Marriot, & Hilton, etc.. (3 stages in hotel development)

  16. The Industrial Revolution Which started in the 1760s, facilitated the construction of Hotels everywhere around the World (business, disposable income)

  17. The 1920 saw the 1st. boom in the Hotel Industry. In 1923 Architects Marchisio & Prost constructed a Hotel in a Garden in the Heart of Marrakech in Morocco For decades this was considered the most beautiful Hotel in the world:

  18. “La Mamounia” Luxury Hotel Marrakech Romantic, Casually, Elegant, Exotic; Staff: Gracious, Accommodating not Overbearing

  19. Hotels were built not only in Cities, but also in the Mountains. The first Ski Resorts in Switzerland (Saint-Moritz, Gstaad, Montana, Aspen etc.) These were very comfortable establishments, mostly for the Rich

  20. These years were also notable for the construction of the first “Casino” Hotels (Mont Carlo, London, Paris, Las Vegas)

  21. 2st. Boom in the Hotel Industry The mid 1960 saw the beginning of mass Tourism New Tourist Resorts flourished around the Mediterranean (Jet Engine Commercial Airliners)

  22. Hotels for Business People 1970 saw the construction of Hotels for “Business people” This movement was supported by several factors. (Business Centres, no computing)

  23. “Black Gold” (Oil) Then there was the sudden prosperity, in the “Middle Eastern Countries” which attracted business people from around the world.

  24. This started an important Business Travel trend. Which initiated the development of Hotels Primarily designed for Business People in Middle-Eastern cities like: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh & Jeddah

  25. The 3rd. Hotel Boom The 3rd. boom in the Hotel Industry began in 1980. Marked by more inventive Marketing & the development of Hotels increasingly adapted to a particular type of clientele. (specialised, computing, Internet)

  26. This trend prompted the construction of Airport Hotels followed by Hotels with Conference Facilities, Health Hotels/Spas, etc.. (JFK, Paris, Tokyo, London, 1day meetings / early flights)

  27. 1980 In the 1980’s, the Far East began to welcome both Business People & Tourists Tourist were beginning to discover the countries of the Rising Sun, such as: Japan,South Korea, Thailand, & China,

  28. 1990 The Gulf War helped to create, great insecurity for both Individuals and Business travel 1991 is considered to be the Black Year of the Hotel/Hospitality Industry

  29. TECHNOLOGY By mid 90’s, Technology started to take its rightful place in hotel administration (simplification of check-in, and check-out procedures, Internet) Global Reservation Systems, Marketing Management etc…

  30. The main expansion zones for the Hotel Industry in the late 1990’s was Middle East, (Gulf States) China, India, Latin America

  31. At the end of the 1990’s construction began in Dubai on one of the most ambitious and prestigious Tourist complexes in the Region, if not the World. Jumeirah Beach (Google Earth) Hotel Burj Al Arab (Expensive)

  33. Today Today Hotels offer wellness programs:- Including Health & Beauty Centres, Personalised Services, & Treatments, Anti-stress, Revitalising, Regenerating Programs, etc.

  34. Today With the advent of the Credit Crunch in the last 5 Year or so ……… The Hotel Industry is trying to adapt & change to the changed climate. (Less Money)

  35. The Further of the Hotel / Hospitality Industry ?

  36. (1) Airline Business (2) Information Technology (ICT)

  37. Airline Business Transport is an essential element of tourism, providing the vital link between the tourist generating areas and destinations. Thus developments in aviation will have major implications for many leisure and Tourism markets in the future.

  38. Airline Business ‘In the past, the growth of Tourism has been fuelled by increasing prosperity, longer holidays and cheap fuel. The future of all 3 elements is now questionable, (Oil) 43

  39. Airline Business (Future) Shorter holidays with advance booking. Out of Peak Season Leisure Travel, is set to gradually increase to avoid Peak Pricing. Business travel are opting for value travel (Coach) 44

  40. What hasn't changed over time? "The only 3 business which will never go out of style over the Centuries in the Hospitality Industry are...

  41. "...food(people have to eat!)  "...lodging(people want a safe place to sleep!) "...beverage(people like their beverages!)

  42. Information Technology Computerization in the future will allow Hotels to react more speedily to market needs, and to customer demands, both quickly & accurately. (Events: sporting, concerts, cultural, etc…)

  43. Hotels in the Future “Example of a trend in the future” Self-Service Kiosks that will allow guests to check in to there hotel are on the way (Front Office) 48

The Future These touch screen Kiosk will be designed to simplify the check in process in Hotels: Check in/out within 30 seconds Encode room keys Upgrade and change rooms View, print and e-mail bills and receipts (Hotel Departure) Check in and print boarding passes for flights Scan passports and Driving licenses 49

  45. The traditional role of information Technology as a back office support for accounting & bookkeeping is clearly going to moved to the front of house & center stage. (All areas of the Hotel will be much more computerized)
