Unemployment in the U.S. By: Breanna Dean and Rylie Moore 2-8-12 Pd. 4
What’s the Problem? Our problem is unemployment in the U.S. Unemployment is a major issue in the United States these days. Without paying jobs, American citizens don’t have enough money to afford bills, food, housing, clothes, etc. Everyone in the U.S. that does not have a job is affected by this.
Why People Should Care? People should care about this because it is something that affects a lot of people in America. The people without jobs cannot buy things as often as people with jobs, causing businesses to lose service possibly then closing down.
Facts • The United States unemployment rate is 8.5% • Last July, 2.5 million Americans lost their unemployment benefits when Congress did not pass the jobs bill • In July 2011, unemployment rates rose to 9.2% • In December 2011, 1,384 masses lay off actions affected 145,648 workers • Delaware comes in 22th with an unemployment rate of 7.4%
Root Cause of Unemployment The root cause unemployment is more than just one thing. But just one of those many reasons is the increasing population and lack of economic development. Increasing population means the supply of jobs is always demanded. Lack of development means that if the workplace is looking for skilled employees and someone isn’t skilled, the workplace will not hire them. For example, anyone cannot send a application to work as a nurse if they have not been to college studying that.
Scope Unemployment is a federal problem. It is also a state problem, but we are looking at it as the whole United State’s problem.
3 Ways to Solve This Problem • The government gives money to existing businesses to help them create more jobs for people who need them. • Current businesses need to be given the chance to expand. • Pre-training programs in specific areas and communities.
The Best Solution for This Problem I believe the best way to help this problem is pre-training programs in specific areas and communities because if you allow large , successful businesses to expand there will be more employers employed, which will give more people jobs, and more people money. Therefore, that helps the unemployment rate.
Who we Contacted About This Issue We contacted Tom Carper, John Carney, and Chris Coons about the unemployment issue in the U.S. and wrote the letter on the next few slides…
Why We Contacted These People We contacted these people, Tom Carper, John Carney, and Chris Coons because they are federal officials that could possibly help with this issue for Americans.
Letter to the Federal Officials Dear Tom Carper, John Carney, and Chris Coons, The United States unemployment rate is currently 8.5 percent. This is a problem for all American citizens, especially for young adults who look forward to getting a job and making a lot of money. Based on our research, the unemployment rate in the U.S. fell in 25 states, and rose in 14 states. In December, 1,384 masses lay off actions affected 145,648 worker. My partner and I have some ideas on how we can improve the unemployment rate. Adding new businesses to our economy will help create jobs. However to make these businesses begin, financial incentives need to be offered. Especially to small business owners, who can help make businesses in a small town like Seaford. My neighbor just bought a small business here in Seaford, (Sweet Serenity Chocolates) and to make their business expand, they had to have financial resources to get the business up and going. Having training classes or making sure that a town is ready to support new businesses with a new work force is a good way to help unemployment. If the town does not support the proposed business, then there is no point in having it. If you make training classes in a town that supports a proposed business, then the citizens who are interested in that business may take a training class to make sure they know what to do, and how to handle certain situations. Providing current businesses to expand, not just making new ones will help unemployment decrease. This is because if you allow large, successful businesses to expand there will be more employers employed, which will give more people job, and more people money. Any of these options could help a small town like Seaford as it tries to overcome the economic down turn that has ripped our nation. I'm a teenager, I want to have a good first job. I also want it to be one that I enjoy, and that I have knowledge about. Thank you for your time and consideration, and thank you for representing our beautiful country, America. We look forward to your response. Sincerely, Rylie Moore and Breanna Dean
