  4. Banknotes • They are inspired by the architectural styles of seven periods in Europe’s cultural history. • They are identical throughout the euro area – allowing you to use any euro banknote anywhere in the euro area.

Coins • The coins range from €2 to 1 cent. • Each one has a “European” side and a “national” side. • The European sides show either the EU before its enlargement in 2004 or a geographical image of Europe. • The national sides show symbols or images from the countries that issue the coins. • You can use any euro coin anywhere in the euro area.

  15. €2 and €1 coins feature the federal eagle, a traditional symbol of German sovereignty.

  16. 50, 20, and 10 cent coins feature the Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor), which symbolizes the division and subsequent unification of Germany

  17. 5, 2, and 1 cent coins feature an oak twig, reminiscent of the design on the old German pfennig (penny) coins
