Telecom Base Station Group 2 Presentation Gage Hermanson AshleaKrupa Tyler Brun Seung Ho Park
Definition of Needs and Requirements The object of this project is to design a telecom cell phone base station system in a developing region that uses an alternative energy source to run the base station • Needs • Reliable and sustainable energy source • Diesel generator • Sodium metal halide battery • Area with no or unreliable energy grid • Able to be implemented with minimal resources and reusable across developing nations • Requirements • Country in a no grid application • Constant 1.2 kW work load • BTS DC equipment at -48 VDC • Diesel driven DC generator set • Alternative energy source • Sodium metal halide battery • Appropriate hut equipment
Selecting a Country to Implement Telecom Base Station (cont.) • Weighted Selection Factors
Selecting a Country to Implement Telecom Base Station (cont.) • Weighted Selection Matrix for Choosing a Country for Telecom Base Station • Rankings based on a value from 1 to 5 with 5 being the highest and are multiplied by weighted selection.
Social Impact on Kenya After having selected our country using these key factors, we then reviewed if the social impact the telecom base station would have on Kenya. Through research we determined that the telecom base station would be well received by the people Kenya and would prove to be useful in their growing economy. It would not be a difficulty for the people to adjust to the new technology as similar technology already exists in Kenya. The technology would be beneficial to their economy especially because tourism is a large business and it would provide the people of Kenya a way to communicate and contact each other. • Here is a link to an article describing the social impacts cell phones would have on Kenya: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6241603.stm
Conceptual Options • Hydropower • Geothermal Energy • Solar Power • Wind Power
Selection of Best Alternative Energy Source Determining Weight Factors
Selection of Best Alternative Energy Source (cont.) Numerical Scoring Matrix: “5” means feature well-met by solution “1” means feature not in solution at all
Selection of Best Alternative Energy Source (cont.) Weighted Selection Matrix: weighted score (WS) = weight factor x score Winner!
Solar Telecom Base Station • GE produces solar panels we can use in our project • GE’s NaMxType 2 A1 battery • Location is Mombasa, Kenya • Local airport can be used to transport materials • Assembly solar panels at an angel of 40 degrees to obtain maximum sunlight
Lifecycle Cost Estimates • Hut Equipment estimated cost • $35,000 • Operating Costs • Approximately costs 5 cents per kilowatt hour • Start-up costs • $150,000 cell tower construction • About $1,200 for solar panels with new SUNRGI technology
