Lean Canvas The Lean Canvas can be used for startups but it can be a great tool to determine if a product/solution makes sense in a very efficient way. The Lean Canvas proposes to follow a specific order to be filled in indicated on the image hereunder. A good practice is to use post-its when filling the canvas. When going forward, we'll discover that some of our answers don't make sense anymore and need to evolve. "Ow... my cost is quite high compared to the revenue, let's review the proposed solution...", "My customer segment is too big, let's review the problem we really want to solve first" Try to fill the canvas while having the very first version of your product in mind. The content of the canvas can then be changed while your product evolve in later iterations. 1. Problem: Let's focus on the problem we want to solve first (and not the solution!). And let's focus on the 3 main ones. 2. Customer Segments: Who are our customers ? Be specific and start small ! The objective is to go step by step, so in a first phase, who will be our first customers ? 3. Unique Value Proposition: Our differentiator ! 4. Solution: We have a tendency to spend a lot of time on the solution. (It's exciting, isn't it?) Don't! What are the 3 main features ? (Yep, the box is small, and it's on purpose) We don't need to know more, this is usually NOT why a product/solution fails. Initially, focus on the very first step of your solution, what is the smallest version you can build that will bring value.
5. Unfair Advantage: Why are you the right person/team to make this happen ? What is your unfair advantage ? And if you don't have any, at least you know about it, and it would be worth considering creating one along the way... 6. Revenue Stream: Where is the money ? It can be interesting to list the revenue streams, but also to evaluate the actual income. 7. Cost Structure: What are all the costs you have ? Again, try to evaluate how much we are talking about. 8. Key Metrics: What are the key metrics that will help you know when you are on the right path (before you get there) ? If you can have only one, that's great. 9. Channel: How are you going to reach your customers ?
