African Renaissance Conference 2011 Positioning KZN for Africa “Connecting Africa” Karen Kohler Research Manager Tourism KwaZulu-Natal August 2011
Introduction • Need • Status Quo • Opportunities • Actions
Need • Expansion and growth in the tourism sector • Job creation • Increased intercontinental linkages and travel • Increased intracontinental linkages and travel • Increased regional linkages • Clearer identification of KZN tourism gems • Clearer links between what tourists do, what is marketed, and what is sold
Status Quo • Status quo of the tourism sector SAT 2011, UNWTO, WTTC * - Air arrivals
Status Quo (cont’d) • Who is moving, where to / from? • Expansion opportunities
Opportunities • Sea - Cruise Indian Ocean Association • Search for new destinations • Links between eastern seaboard coastal destinations and also the Indian Ocean islands • Air - New, emerging markets • South Africa as a bridging location / destination • Decreasing importance of traditional, stagnating markets • Increased importance of eastern / new markets • Link between the eastern markets (China, India, Malaysia etc) and the western markets (Brazil, Argentina, Mexico) • Link between Africa to the north • Increased ‘degrees of freedom’ or importance of the King Shaka International Airport
Opportunities: Sea (cont’d) • Sea – KZN has 2 major ports, one being the largest in Africa, BUT…. • How have / do we get these assets to work for tourism? • How do we get them to increase business in / to the area, understanding that business is a major ‘driver’ of tourism? • Have we exploited the cruise tourism sector – a significant, growing and lucrative market - successfully? • KZN can offer fly-in cruising, repositioning cruising (during the northern hemisphere winter months) and destination or home port cruising • A cruise terminal?
Status Quo: Air North / south movements It is easy to see from this map that S A is a major hub in terms of air travel on the continent of Africa, particularly in terms of the SADC region. The next step would be to ensure it became a bridging ‘hub’ between east and west.

Actions • Opportunity for the promotion of KZN as the gateway to the east • Opportunity for the promotion of South Africa, and especially KZN as an east/west bridging location • Opportunity to take advantage of the increased interest in the BRIC(S) market • Opportunity to increase direct flights into / out of KSIA • Opportunity to increase arrivals into KZN from our landlocked neighbors by offering targeted packages - beach, shopping, events
