  3. Major successes in CIVITAS projects • Huge range of measures – many very tough to implement: • Access controls • Completely redesigned intermodal PT networks • Smart ticketing • Modern clean vehicles • SUMPs • Bike lanes, bus lanes – taking space away from cars • ITS measures and real time info • Road safety measures CIVITAS Forum l 17-19 October 2011l Funchal (Portugal)

  4. Common success factors emerging? • Money from CIVITAS?! • Take a quality-driven approach • Don’t just offer one isolated service – offer a package • Involve stakeholders/public participation • Know who they are • Prepare well before working with them • Try to anticipate what they might want and think about how to respond beforehand • Share experience at a detailed level • Try to work out what will get you political support • Snowball effect - small successes generate credibility and more success • Not relying only on public sector to deliver measures CIVITAS Forum l 17-19 October 2011l Funchal (Portugal)

  5. Common challenges? • Tendering/contracting procedures • Bureaucracy – not only at national level! • Different laws/enforcement arrangements in different countries • Future financial situation • Cultural barriers • Stubborn old-school technicians! CIVITAS Forum l 17-19 October 2011l Funchal (Portugal)

  6. Things I maybe wanted to hear more about – but didn’t • Managing parking • Failures/problems – and why they happened • What were the real results • How much did mode share change? • How many more cyclists were there? • What was the impact of the CIVITAS measure? • How much things (really) cost! CIVITAS Forum l 17-19 October 2011l Funchal (Portugal)

  7. A few general reflections • Presentations – try to start from the point “If I knew nothing at all about my project – what would I want to know?” • Topics and debates here that I heard at the start of my career 20 years ago – but now in different cities and countries – shows: • Power and importance of initiatives like CIVITAS • Importance of real experience exchange • Cultures and ways of working really can change CIVITAS Forum l 17-19 October 2011l Funchal (Portugal)
