Gdansk is the deepest and one of the largest ports on the Baltic Sea with a long Hanseatic traditiondating from 1373. The city is located in a peaceful bay at the mouth of the biggest Polish river - the Vistula River.
. In its "golden age" the city enjoyed the special status of a municipal republic. It was also a melting pot of cultures and ethnical groups. The air of tolerance and the wealth built on trade made culture, science, and art flourished.
Gdansk is also the place where the local struggle for freedom and justice started, and the place of birth of "Solidarity”, the first Independent Trade Union in the Soviet Block countries. These developments triggered the avalanche that toppled communism in Europe.
