  2. The Founding Fathers • Ben Franklin invented the bifocals • James Madison was the fourth president of the United States • Thomas Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence. • John Jay was the signer of the Treat of Paris.

  3. 3 Regions • New England: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire • Middle: New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware • Southern: Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia

  4. What makes the regions unique • New England: Fishing, Whaling, Logging, Shipbuilding. • Middle: Paper making, Logging. • Southern: Farming, slave trade craftsmanship.

  5. Jobs during the Colonial Times • Apothecary was the closest thing they had to doctors and they did all the surgery • Gunsmith was an expert in metal and made many of the guns the used to fight. • Silversmith was a excellent sculptor who designed many objects.

  6. Music and Instruments • They played the fifle and the drums. They used them most of the time when the were calling the militia to arms.

  7. Games • Some of the most common games were checkers and marble. The kids played these games to pass the time away.

  8. Tools Hoes were used for gardening and helped dig up crops. Axes were used to cut down trees and were use to build their houses Hammers were commonly used with blacksmiths and carpenters. They were very useful for nailing things into something.

  9. Food There were many types of food= the colonists ate. One of them is Shepard’s Pie. Another is welsh rabbit

  10. Homes The rich people lived in big brick hoes with plantations The poor people lived in little dugouts. Middle class lived in 1 to 2 room houses that had an attic.

  11. Education • Education was very important in the 13 colonies. Many parents couldn’t afford it so most kids learn at their homes.
