  1. Renewable Energy A Critical Part Of A Balanced Energy Solution FPSC Public Workshop January 19, 2007

  2. Florida’s IOUs support renewable energy…. • As part of a balanced solution • Implemented in a fair and cost-effective manner

  3. Florida’s IOUs are actively engaged in the pursuit of renewable energy: Progress Energy . . . • E-grass/Biomass • PV • Hydrogen • MSW, landfill gas • Energy efficiency • Waste Heat (phosphate industry)

  4. Tampa Electric…. • Biomass • Waste Heat (phosphate industry) • PV • Solid Waste • Landfill Gas • Energy Efficiency • Other

  5. Gulf Power…. • PV • Geothermal • Energy Efficiency • Other

  6. Florida is a leader in renewable energy…. …even though wind, hydro, geothermal, and even solar are better suited to other areas Electricity Generation by Fuel Source – 2005 Source: U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Information Administration, Electric Power Monthly, March 2006

  7. In moving forward we must be mindful of…. • Reliability….will they perform and what happens if they don’t? • Arbitrary goals or mandates not linked to real renewable potential • High costs….what price are consumers willing to pay?

  8. We believe good policy includes… • Transparency of additional costs borne by customers • Equitable distribution of costs among all customers in the state • Preference for new renewable energy sources in Florida • Coordination with federal laws to prevent undue cost burden • Consideration of energy efficiency, a Florida strength and the cleanest / greenest alternative • Assurance that value remains in Florida
