This presentation provides an overview of the current work and recent accomplishments of the UNECE in developing international standards for meat and meat products, including veal, eggs, and edible meat co-products.

Current workUNECE Standard for Veal – Carcases and Cuts The meeting of Rapporteurs was organized by the delegation of France. Delegations from Australia, France, the Netherlands, Poland and the United States attended to the meeting. A draft standard was presented to the 17th session of the Specialized Section in April and a decision was made to incorporate the Veal Standard (once completed) as an Annex to the Bovine Standard.

A Rapporteurs meeting was held in Moscow in October, 2007, to revise and update the Egg Standards at the request of the Working Party. The Standard was considered by the Section in April 2008 and referred back to the Rapporteurs for further work. A second meeting of Rapporteurs was held in Russia last September. This activity will be completed by the Section in 2009 and it is expected to be submitted to the Working Party for approval in 2009. Current workRevision of Standards for Eggs and Egg Products
Current WorkJoint Russia/UNECE Seminar: “International Standards on Meat and Meat Products – a Common Language for International Trade” Moscow, 30 September – 2 October, 2008 The V.M. Gorbatov All-Russian Meat Research Institute (VNIIMP) and UNECE held a seminar on practical application of UNECE meat standards. About fifty experts from Russia, Belarus, Moldova, Mongolia and Ukraine took part in the seminar. Mr. Steve Olson, from US Department of Agriculture, and Mr. Philippe Jouault, cutting plant manager from Gâtine Viandes, France, showed how to process porcine carcasses, on the basis of the UNECE standard, into retail cuts according to US and French/European methodologies. Mrs. Claire Coupin (France), quality manager of the Confédération Nationale de la Triperie Française presented the draft UNECE Standard for Edible Meat Co-products.

Recent accomplishments • 2007: • Submit draft standards for Caprine and Edible Meat Co-products • Revision of the Bovine Standard • Rapporteurs prepared a draft standard for Duck • Rapporteurs revised standards for egg and eggs products • Publication of the Standards for Chicken and Ovine • 2008: • Submit draft standards for Duck and Edible Meat Co-products • Rapporteurs prepared a draft standard for Veal • Rapporteurs continued revision of standards for egg and eggs products • Publication of the Standards for Llama/Alpaca and Porcine
New UNECE Standards Edible Meat Co-Products • “Edible meat co-products”: The Section proposed a new name to identify the standard, since this name is defined as animal products other than red or white muscles, allowing the grouping of the terms offal, fancy meats, variety meats and edible by-products in one single concept. The Standard was amended to add blood products and pork items (Currently, the standard includes more than 100 items from bovine, veal, ovine, caprine and porcine). • The Specialized Section submitted to the Working Party the amended texts on edible meat co-products for adoption as new UNECE standard.
“Duck meat – carcases and parts”: The delegation of China prepared the draft text with input from several delegations. The text was agreed upon by the Section in April 2008. The Specialized Section proposed the following items: Continue the process to finalise the draft of a preliminary UNECE Standard for Veal Meat - Carcases and Cuts. Complete the work on revising the Standards for Eggs and Egg Products. Initiate discussions to prepare a preliminary draft of a UNECE Standard for Retail Meat Cuts. The delegation of the United States will prepare a paper explaining the main reasons and objectives to have this standard. The delegation of Poland offered to host a Rapporteurs meeting on Goose, possibly in April 2009. Future work
Future Work Duck Meat – Carcases and Parts A Joint China/UNECE Seminar on Duck will be held in Nanjing, China from 2 to 4 December, 2008. Delegations from Europe, Australia and China will participate. The draft programme of the seminar includes: Presentation of the UNECE Standard for Duck Meat - Carcases and Parts Visit to the Laboratory of Meat Processing and Quality Control, Ministry of Education (Nanjing Agricultural University) Technical visit to duck meat processing companies in Nanjing including "Yurun", one of largest meat group in China
Working together in the development of a global supply chain Long term goals for global e-commerce: Expand UNECE standards on meat Increase ability to promptly respond to industry requests Continually work with industry to maximize e-commerce What is our future in UNECE?
