The movie • In the movie Armageddon, while they are discussing how to stop the asteroid from destroying Earth, a government official assures everyone the the President’s Science Advisor believes a nuclear blast in front of the asteroid will destroy it or move it off course.
Would you trust the fate of earth to him? • Another scientist says ”I went to MIT with the President’s Science Advisor and I wouldn’t trust the fate of the world to a man who got a C- in astrophysics.
Why is accuracy Important? • OOPS! How many millions of dollars did this cost? Now someone has to fix it.
Something doesn’t look right • So much for privacy in this bathroom. Would you leave it or do it over? • Do it over.
What’s wrong with this picture? • I hope you are not in a wheelchair!
Should a heart surgeon be accurate? • Of course!!! • Especially if they are operating on you or someone you love. Would you trust someone who doesn’t value accuracy to operate? • I wouldn’t!!!
Who strives for accuracy? • Scientists, engineers, mathematicians, health-care providers, and factory workers are all examples of people that we may easily recognize as using accuracy in their work. Craftsmen also value accuracy and precision in their art. A craftsman can be a musician, a dancer, a shoemaker, or carpenter, to name a few. • When a carpenter measures the length of a 2x4 before cutting it, he or she may check the measurement to be sure that it is accurate. • A dancer whose movements are synchronized to music may stop moving at the precise instant that the music ends.
Measure twice-Cut Once On any jobsite, mistakes add up to money and wasting money costs profit. Have you ever made a mistake that YOU had to pay for? It’s not a good feeling!
Why is it important to be accurate in school? • Competition for college spots, and scholarship money, has increased dramatically in the last 20 years. The standards are reaching new heights and still going. It is critical that you develop the need for accuracy sooner then later so you will be competitive when the time comes.
