This article discusses the current situation in Slovakia regarding the digitisation of cultural content. It examines the national strategy, funding, and challenges faced in implementing the strategy. The goal is to promote the development of business with cultural content and improve the interoperability of heritage institutions.

„Building Information Society“Operational Programme • Approved by new government in 2006 • Programme’s priorities: • Implementation of ICT in public administration and electronic services (695 166 783 €) • Development of heritage institutions and their infrastructure (163 568 655 €) • Broadband Internet (260 228 383 €) • Technical assistance (36 919 782 €) • Total budget 1.17 billion euro • Libraries, museums, galleries and archives are among priorities • The allocated funding will start up implementation of ICT in culture • Mediating body – Ministry of Culture • Board for ICT Implementation in Culture as the Minister of Culture’s advisory body
National strategy • Currently no national digitisation strategy for cultural content • Fragmented approach • Problemsof interoperability among institutions and information systems of libraries, museums, galleries, monuments, archives • Issues of interoperability among heritage sector and sectors of science and education • No special funding for digitisation • Digitisation on demand or projects based on enthusiasm • Being left behind allowed to learn from other countries • National strategy of digitisation and presentation of cultural, scientific and intellectual content is in preparation • Practical priorities of the national strategy are included in the Information Society Operational Programme
National digitisation programme • All areas of cultural property, all types of „heritage“ under HEREIN • Coordination of the use of public resources for digitisation • Programme is open for cooperation of public and private sector • Programme + partial special projects • The Slovak Digital Library project • Business with cultural content not developed • Partnership with private sector, especially with publishers, booksellers, IT and e-Commerce companies
Chalenges • Mass digitisation of printed Slovak materials within the Slovak Digital Library project • Cooperation and interoperability of heritage institutions and systems • User-oriented digitisation and making access to digital content • Development of business with cultural content • Research and development in heritage institutions and their cooperation with academic sector in research • Interaction with the business sector in developing services, as well as with science, research and development • Integration of technological digitisation processes with analogue preservation measures (microfilming, conservation and restoration of items) • Realisation of projects described in the brochures
