Sharing course trepidations • Objective: Provide students with an opportunity to express pre conceived notions about research class. • Student instructions: • Get into groups of 3-4 • Introduce yourselves • Select someone to write down information • Create a list of fears or anxiety related to this course • Create a list of 2-3 questions you may have about this course

Peer Reviewed Journal Articles Objectives: • Provide students with the skills to distinguish between an empirical study and a literature review/theoretical article. • Assist students in developing an understanding of the function and value of peer-reviewed journals. Student instructions: • In pairs, select a journal and begin looking over the articles. • Determine the classification of the each article and provide a justification

  6. What is it that faculty do? Objectives: • Provide students with understanding of the nature of a faculty position. • Provide students with an opportunity to learn about the present faculty’s research interests. Student instructions: • Locate an article that was written by a faculty member in social work at this institution • Identify the type or article (study versus a literature review/ theoretical article

  7. Dissecting Research Articles Objective: Assist students in understanding how to critically appraise research studies. • Student instructions: • Read through article • Identify the following information • Purpose statement • Sample • Methods • Results • Practice implications

Measurement Objectives: • Develop understanding of the importance of valid and reliable assessments. • Develop understanding of the importance of conceptual definitions and operationalization Student assignment: • Locate a valid and reliable assessment and indicate how you would use it in practice. • Indicate why it is important to use both valid and reliable assessment instruments.

  9. Qualitative Data Analysis Objective: Assist students in developing skills to code basic qualitative data related. Student Instructions: • Complete anonymous questionnaire by the next class • What would you like the instructor or class to keep doing? • What would you like the instructor or class to stop doing? • What would you like the instructor or class to start doing? • Code the responses to the questionnaire • Identify themes

Federal and State Registries Objective: Develop the skills to access and utilize federal registries Student Instructions: • Based on the scenario, search this database and find an intervention that could be used to address the client’s situation. • Reflect on the process of searching the database and locating this information. How could you apply this in the future? Example registries include: ODDDP Model Programs Guide and the California Evidence-Based Clearinghouse for Child Welfare

  11. Using Research to Inform Practice Objective: Develop skills in searching for evidence to make and support practice related decisions. Student assignment: • In groups, identify a social problem and the interventions that have been used to assess the social problem • Present the social problem to classmates and include an overview of the interventions that have been used,and a justification for the intervention you would recommend. • Use a pre/post questionnaire to assess the knowledge gained by classmates.
