Understanding Scar Tissue & Graston Technique Scar tissue and/or adhesions prevent the fluid movement of muscles, tendons, ligaments and surrounding tissue. Thus, when someone says they feel tight, or have pain with movement, they are experiencing the binding effect of scar tissue. . In this slide show, you will learn how clinicians use the Graston Technique to treat acute and chronic conditions, and return the soft tissue to its normal, healthy stage
Detailed Muscle Structure Close inspection of a muscle, reveals it is made up of smaller and smaller components. The inner workings of the bicep muscle first show the muscle fasciculi, followed by the smaller muscle fibers, followed by the smallest component called the myofibrils. The myofibrils are the cells that make muscle contraction possible. It would take hundreds of these to make up the thickness of one strand of hair, which can be viewed only under a microscope.
Fascia Surrounds Everything Fascia, a thin layer of another major classification of tissue, weaves its way around every organ, muscle and tendon. Fascia is likened to a flexible skeleton that connects the top of your head to the tips of your toes to everything else. Scar tissue can bind fascia to muscle, tendons, ligaments and muscle Most scar tissue cannot be felt by the human hand and when left untreated, is responsible for much of the ongoing complaints and permanent restrictions that occur after injury. Without the fascia system, the human body would lack form.
Complete View of the Muscle & Fascia System This slide shows a more complete view if the fascia system, which is essential for normal function of the muscle and skeletal system. The fascia system is what gives the human body its form- Fascia woven through and surrounds the muscle system Fascia system is what connects the top of our heads with the tips of our toes
Scar Tissue and its Effects Unfortunately, scar tissue can adhere fascia to muscle…impairing (range of motion) and producing pain. Tendons and ligaments also are surrounded with fascia and can be affected in the same manner. Fascial restrictions (scar tissue and adhesions) left untreated can prevent fluid movement. Fascial adhesions (scar tissue) is the single most responsible factor for recidivism..
Graston Technique is non-invasive , drug free Graston Technique breaks down and releases scar tissue. The technique utilizes six patented stainless steel instruments, uniquely shaped to treat different areas of the body. Graston instruments vibrate when contact is made with fibrotic tissue allowing both the patient and clinician to “feel” what is going on under the skin. Patients are able to remain at work, engage in everyday activity during treatment. Most patients have a positive response by visits 3 or 4 and are released from care between visits 10 and 11 with good to complete recovery.
GT instruments direct micro-trauma to injured tissue causing the body to shed the tissue and lay down new healthy tissue. Photos from the Human Performance Lab at Ball State University depict “healthy” and “injured” tissue Photo One: Look closely at the tissue and note that the healthy tissue lays flat and in a longitudinal pattern- this healthy tissue is able to move without restriction or pain. Photo Two: Injured tissue fibers bind to other tissue fibers in a scattered pattern. This tissue is restricted , painful and does not move back and forth or side to side easily. • Ball State University Human Performance Lab - Graston Research- Healthy Tissue (1992) • Ball State University Human • Ball State University Human • Performance Lab Graston Research Injured Tissue
FDA Approved Acute or chronic; Graston Works GT6 The GT instruments release larger adhesions, along with microscopic adhesions GT 1: The “HANDLEBAR” used for the treatment of large muscle groups such as the back, neck, hip or thigh . GT2: The “BOTTLE OPENER”used for small muscle groups. GT3: The ”TONGUE DEPRESSOR” best for pinpointing specific areas or lesions GT4: The “SCANNER” used to scan for and treat scar tissue. GT5: The “BOOMERANG” used to diagnose and for aggressive treatment. GT6: The “CAN OPENER” used to treat small areas of the body such as hands and feet . Graston Instruments (GT) GT5 GT1 GT4 GT2 GT3
Recidivism Bound Tissue As the Graston Technique instrument slides across bound fibers, it pulls the fibers to the side and releases them- (which feels much like going over a speed bump (as noted in slide 7) With treatment, this process generally will reduce or eliminated the adhered fibers, restoring function and eliminating the pain associated with it. Much of the recidivism associated with injury and treatment is a direct result of the scar tissue which remains after injury. The Graston Technique removes scar tissue at the site of complaint as well as all along the Kinetic Chain (the muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia ) that connect and interact with the injured site. Treating with Graston Technique
Graston Technique The Graston Technique is used diagnostically as well as to treat. Injuries are treated at the site of the pain or restriction; however, clinicians will scan the surrounding areas- follow the Kinetic chain – the muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia) that connect to it to find if there is an underlying cause for the injury. Change The Injury Change The Risk • Graston Technique-changes the source of the injury- the injured tissue • It causes the body to lay down new undamaged tissue that moves without pain or restrictions- • Graston Technique removes the source of recidivism Which is why we say that you can
