  2. 3 3 8 History ▶Reading Comprehension 1 Only President Holding Patent Abraham Lincoln had a strong interest in new technology. He was the only United States President to hold a patent. Lincoln learned river navigation early in life and took a flatboat down the Mississippi River as a teenager. The boat traveled from New Salem to New Orleans. At one point, the boat slid onto a bank and was set free only after great efforts. In later years, while traveling on the Great Lakes as a young man, Lincoln’s ship was bumped into a sandbar. These two similar experiences led him to conceive his invention. Abraham Lincoln received Patent No. 6,469 for “A Device for Buoying Vessels Over Shoals” on May 22, 1849. His invention consisted of a set of bellows attached to the hull of a ship just below the water line. After reaching a shallow place, the bellows were filled with air that buoyed the vessel higher, making it float higher. Abraham Lincoln carved the model for his patent application with his own hands out of wood. It is on display at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History. In early 1997, the original patent drawing submitted in 1846 was discovered. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article.
