  2. Madrasa-religious college or university • Haram-prohibited, unlawful activities • Jihad- “strive, effort, struggle” to follow Islam; can include defense of faith, armed struggle, or holy war • Kafir- “unbeliever” or infidel, one who is “ungrateful” and rejects the message of Islam

  3. Takfir-excommunication, the proclaiming of a fellow believer as an infidel • Ummah-Islamic community; refers to the worldwide Muslim • Ayatollah- “Sign of God”, title of a high-ranking Shiite/Shia religious leader • Fatwa-formal legal opinion or decision of a mufti on a matter of Islamic law

Hadith-narrative report of the Prophet Mohammed’s sayings and actions • Mullah-a local religious leader • Salafi- “ancestors”, 1st generations of Muslim community, beliefs practiced are considered authoritative • Mufti-specialist on Islamic law, competent to deliver a fatwa or legal interepetation or belief

  5. Shariah- “path”, Islamic law • Sunnah-normative practice or exemplary behavior of Mohammad • Shiite- “party or fraction” of Ali; those Muslims who believe that Muhammad sent Ali to be true leader of Muslim community • Sunni-Muslims who believe that they represent Mohammad’s early Muslim community
