Newton’s Laws of Motion Relay New team bonding activity plus review of Newton’s Laws and the Scientific Method
What if your team had to do the Newton’s Law of Motion Relay, what place would you come in? How much liquid would your team finish with? SEP # 2 – D, Data Table SEP # 3 a, b, c Analyze and Interpret Data SEP # 4 – A, Hypothesis, B, conclusion, C, solution based on scientific ideas SBR: vocabulary/language
The Team Relay 1 bowl of liquid Blue food coloring 1 ping pong ball Timer Graduated cylinder Each team divides facing each other with the bowl resting on the ground At go, pick up the bowl and run towards the opposite side team, put the bowl down and the next person continues. The first team to finish without losing the ball and has the most liquid left wins.
Hypothesis • Create your hypothesis • If, then, because statement • Most of the time a hypothesis is written like this: • "If __[I do this] _____, then _____[this]_____ will happenbecause ___________. • Your hypothesis should be something that you can actually test, what's called atestable hypothesis. In other words, you need to be able to measure both "what you do" and "what will happen."
Example • If our team understands how Newton’s First Law of Motion effects matter then we will finish ______ place with ______ mL liquid in the bowl because ____(why)___________. • What is the control?_________________ • What is the variable?________________
Data Collection • Organize team • Leader, material person, recorder, reporter • Recorder records the time for team and the measured amount of liquid for data table • Material person measures the amount of liquid • Reporter shares out gathered data • Leader keeps team on task together
Analyze results • Write about your team: • What place the team came in (control) • What was the time (independent variable) • What was the amount of liquid (dependent variable) • Then write the class: • What was the mean time • What was the mean amount of liquid • What patterns, similarities, and differences in data (observations) and possible sources of error • Possible ways to begin are:
Analyze results • Possible ways to begin are: • The Newton’s Laws of Motion relay… • Our team the Awesome Ants, results are…
Conclusion • Answer question • Hypothesis supported or not supported citing specific data • Reflection on how project can be extended into a related investigation • Use scientific ideas and principles in describing the event (SBR: vocabulary/language)
