Class Structure • Professor: Brian Taylor • Department: Urban Planning • Subject: Public Transit, Land Use and Accessibility • Class Size: 18 students • Class Meetings: Three pre-trip class meetings, 1 week in London and three post-trip class meetings • Syllabus: Students arranged for guest lectures in London, in conjunction with Brian Taylor, and served as group leaders each day in London.

Day One • Agency: London Museum of Transport • Representative/Speaker: Mike Ashworth, Assistant Curator • Major Presentation Themes: Historical and present transportation policies, planning issues and politics of London. • Other daily activities: Riverboat tour on the Thames River and the tube.
Day Two Agency/Institution: Cambridge University, Department of Architecture Representative/Speaker: Professor Echenique Major Presentation Themes: Cambridge Future Project – looks at long-term planning options for the area within 25 miles of Cambridge City. The project utilizes computer modeling to explore planning options for the future location of people, jobs and the cost of living and production. Other daily activities: Cambridge was an all day event. The class rode the regional train network from London to Cambridge.
Day Three Agency/Institution: Transport and General Workers’ Union Representative/Speaker: Roger Sealey Major Presentation Themes: Public/Private Partnerships, Unions and repercussions of privatization and deregulation on the bus industry (low-wage, low-skill labor and recruiting difficulties). Other daily activities: Met with Samir Satchu, creator of TubeHell.com - website that addresses tube issues, provides updates and serves as a community forum. Discussed the deterioration of the tube and internal politics.
Day Four Agency/Institution: University of Westminster, School of Built Environment Representative/Speaker: Professor Peter White Major Presentation Themes: Socially excluded groups and communities in local Transport. Bus privatization and network system, as well as transportation and land use policies.
Day Four Continued Agency/Institution: Transport for London Representative/Speaker: Colin Mann, Transport Manager Major Presentation Themes: History, political structure and current planning strategy for the Transport for London, formerly London Transport.
Day Four Continued Agency/Institution: Department of Environment Transport Regions Representative/Speaker: Anne Frye , Head of Mobility & Inclusion Unit. Major Presentation Themes: Transportation policies and provision as they related to access and socially excluded groups
Day Five Agency: The Oxford House Representative/Speaker: Kim Adams, Director Major Presentation Themes: Affordable housing, community outreach, the Somali community, job training and skill building. Other daily activities: Participated in a tour of two affordable housing projects, one for young adults (16-25) and the other for adults (Mostly Somali Immigrants).
Themes and Current Issues • Underground strike • Alternative Public Infrastructure financing: Privatization of Bus and Underground • Anti-congestion policies in Central London: high parking charges, congestion pricing, TravelCard (special pricing for Underground and bus system) and public transit. • New London Government – Mayor Ken Livingstone and the GLC • Newly formed Transport for London (TFL) • London government’s new focus on socially excluded groups, part of mayor’s transport strategy • Political pushes to get people on the bus • Deteriorating state of the Underground (currently at capacity) • Affordable Housing
