Narrative • This is another key aspect of Media Studies. • It is to do with how texts are organised.
Definition • Take this definition of narrative: … “the ordering of events into a logical cause and effect structure which helps us to understand the progression between those events and the purpose of that progression.”
Todorov Theory • From ‘The Politics of Prose’ • Todorov identified the basis of narrative as ‘movement between two equilibriums’ which are similar but not identical.
Vladimir Propp • The Morphology of the Folktale • Propp identified a number of common narrative structures through his classification of 100 Russian folktales in 1928; he also identified common character roles. • His work has been adapted by media theorists to apply to other texts, particularly film texts. In the film we usually share the point of view of Ofelia and by extension can see all that she sees. • The strange world of the faun, is essential to the narrative as it provides Ofelia with the motivation for her actions and moves the story along in a particular way towards the resolution
