Rescue Exercise 4: DistressedDiver Underwater • Overview • This exercise switches your focus from surface rescues to assisting a diver experiencing problems underwater. • You’ll deal with overexertion and out-of-air situations. • Your focus is to be able to recognize these problems quickly and to respond appropriately. Rescue - Rescue Training Session Three
Rescue Exercise 4: DistressedDiver Underwater • Learning Objectives • By the end of this exercise, you should be able to: • Demonstrate the ability to correctly identify and respond to a diver simulating overexertion and an active panic ascent underwater. • Correctly identify, and supply air to, via an alternate air source, a diver simulating an out-of-air emergency, and make a controlled air-sharing ascent with the diver. Rescue - Rescue Training Session Three
Rescue Exercise 4: DistressedDiver Underwater • Skill and Technique Briefing • Dealing with a distressed, overexerted diver underwater. • Watch for heavy breathing and stress signs like wide eyes. • Have distressed diver stop all activity. Signal “stop.” • Reassure diver and have distressed diver rest. • Encourage the diver to reestablish a normal breathing rhythm. Rescue - Rescue Training Session Three
Rescue Exercise 4: DistressedDiver Underwater • Skill and Technique Briefing continued… • Dealing with a panicked diver underwater. • Make contact with victim, low on the body or from behind, to slow and control the panicked ascent. • Dump air from the BCD(s) and flare out to create drag. • At the surface, establish positive buoyancy and continue with surface procedures as appropriate. • IMPORTANT: During this exercise, divers playing the victim will keep the regulator in their mouths at all times. Victims and rescuers will ascend no faster than 18 metres/60 feet per minute, or slower if stipulated by a diver’s computer. Rescue - Rescue Training Session Three
Rescue Exercise 4: DistressedDiver Underwater • Skill and Technique Briefing continued… • Simulated Out-of-Air Emergency • Think about proper procedures relating to the use of alternate air sources. • Ensure that the victim has reestablished normal breathing before beginning an ascent. • The out-of-air diver needs to orally inflate the BCD at the surface to continue simulating out-of-air. • Provide buoyancy support while the victim orally inflates. Rescue - Rescue Training Session Three
Rescue Exercise 4: DistressedDiver Underwater • Conduct • This exercise is to be performed in water too deep to stand up in but not deeper than 6 metres/20 feet in open water. • Work in buddy teams as “victims” and “rescuers.” • Practice each aspect of the distressed diver underwater as discussed. • Think about the identification of the problem. Rescue - Rescue Training Session Three
Rescue Exercise 5: Missing Diver • Overview • During this exercise, you’ll organize and conduct a search for a missing diver. • Use basic search patterns. • Review basic compass navigation skills. Rescue - Rescue Training Session Three
Rescue Exercise 5: Missing Diver • Learning Objective • By the end of this exercise, you should be able to: • Demonstrate how to quickly and efficiently search for and locate a missing diver using an underwater search pattern prescribed by the instructor. Rescue - Rescue Training Session Three
Rescue Exercise 5: Missing Diver • Skill and Technique Briefing • Missing Diver Procedures • Contact local emergency help and determine where the diver was last seen. • Post spotters to watch for bubbles. • Assign qualified divers to don equipment. • Dispatch skin divers to mark the last known location. • Determine if the diver may have left the area without informing anyone. • Dispatch scuba teams to initiate underwater search. Rescue - Rescue Training Session Three
Rescue Exercise 5: Missing Diver • Skill and Technique Briefing continued… • Underwater Search Techniques • Establish a recall system – have divers surface and return after 30 minutes. • Never use single-handed searching or unqualified divers – decide whether to conduct the search yourself or to coordinate the activity. • Sink, do not swim, to the bottom to replicate how an unconscious diver might drift to the bottom. Rescue - Rescue Training Session Three
Rescue Exercise 5: Missing Diver • Skill and Technique Briefing continued… • Underwater Search Techniques continued… • Use the search pattern most appropriate to the environment, situation and circumstance. • U pattern search • Expanding square search • Circular search • Surface led search • Terminate search after 30 minutes if missingdiver isn’t found and turn the search over to professionals. Rescue - Rescue Training Session Three
Rescue Exercise 5: Missing Diver • Conduct • Review missing diver procedures. • Think about the four search patterns. • Determine which pattern is the most suitable for the given circumstance. • In teams, conduct an underwater search for a simulated missing diver. • Focus on effectively practicing and implementing each pattern. Rescue - Rescue Training Session Three
Overview This scenario practice teaches you to quickly implement and organize a search for a missing diver. Your goal is to follow the steps for implementing the search. Scenario Practice Rescue - Rescue Training Session Three
Scenario Practice • Performance Requirement • By the end of this scenario practice, you should be able to: • Working in a team, effectively organize a search for a simulated missing diver, implementing each step of the missing diver procedure. Rescue - Rescue Training Session Three
Skill and Technique Briefing Scenario practice will involve missing diver procedures. Run through the scenario several times so you can take turns in different roles. Focus on the procedures for entering the water, determining the appropriate search pattern, and practice recall procedures. Scenario Practice Rescue - Rescue Training Session Three
Postdive • Performance review. • What happened? • Were there mistakes? • What worked? • What didn’t work? • What did you learn? • Did you use good judgment in evaluating the “victims’” situations? • Let’s compare and contrast the different techniques used. • Disassemble and stow equipment. • Next class assignment.
