Summarising main ideas – Putting in order, answering questions, key words, making headings Asking questions – Thinking aloud, questions to show comprehension Discuss and compare opinions – What you thought of the text, how useful or enjoyable it was, how well you and pupil read. Read aloud to pupils, modelling good reading and thinking. Silent reading – both pupil and tutor read silently alone for short time. Echo reading – read a section to pupil, pupil then reads same section. Any other suggestions? Different Approaches Learning and Teaching Scotland

Using websites You can find out about authors, play games and take part in activities, read reviews of books and write your own. Magazines and newspapers Pupils come across these in everyday life. Check for suitability. Comics and graphic novels Add these if the pupil shows an interest. Pictures, action and humour can be very motivating. Check for suitability. Some graphic novels can have very adult themes. Look at LTS literacy website for some ways to use graphic novels and some other general resources.
