Introduction • Middleware is steadily moving out of the test-bed environment and into the mainstream. • Implementation challenges in the Higher Education environment are a reflection of the idiosyncrasies of that environment. • One of the weird and wonderful features of the higher education landscape is the multi-campus institution.

  3. Variations on the Multi-Campus Theme • Multiple campuses with common business rules, practices/applications. • Multiple campuses with common business rules but varying practices/applications. • Multiple campuses with varying business rules and practices/applications.

  4. The Multi-Campus Difference • If Middleware can only be effective to the extent it reflects Business Rules and facilitates Business Practices, and if Business Rules & Practices are altered when Campuses aggregate, then the nature of Middleware solutions will differ in such aggregations.
