Today’s Lesson Protein
Protein # Definition: A higher molecular weight biochemical compound, composed of so many amino acids is called protein or A polymer of 100- 400 amino acids formed by a chain of peptide bonds is called protein.
Protein # Distribution: Protein is present as structural elements in all animals. It is also present in enzyme, hormone and antibody.
Protein # Properties of protein: • It is colloidal in nature. • It is soluble in water, dilute acid, alkali and solution. • On hydrolysis it breaks into amino acids. • The nature of protein may be changed by various physical and chemical process.
Protein # Classification of protein: Protein are classified into two groups. Such as • Simple protein and • Conjugated protein.
Simple Protein Simple protein are those on hydrolysis by enzymes or acids, only amino acids are found is known as simple protein. There are six types of simple protein on the basis of solubility. Viz. • Albumin: It is present in the milk, white part of eggs and in barley. • Globulins: These proteins are present in the seeds. • Glutelins: Glutenin of wheat, orygenin of rice are these types of proteins. • Histones: Mostly they are found in the nucleus and nucleic acid. E.g. Arginine, lysine. • Protamins: They are found in nucleus and nucleic acids. e.g. Arginine. • Prolamins:Hordein of barley, zein of corn, gleadin of wheat are found in the endosperm of these crops.
Conjugated Protein There are five types . Viz. • Nucleoproteins, • Glycoproteins, • Lipoproteins, • Chromoproteins, • Metaloproteins.
Functions of Protein • Protein acts as a structural unit of membranes and organ. • It regulates the growth of a body. • It regulates the various metabolic activities of a cell. • It regulates the biochemical reactions of the cell in the form of enzyme. • It acts as antibody against diseases of a living body.
